The Skateboarder's Companion

What year is this from? Late 90s?

July 1999

I wonder if R1 also has adverts in this

RaD had that Roces (?) back page advert for years.
Was it Roces or Bauer?

Probably 97/98 hence the fake ad

Yeah Chopper said 99. Was trying to figure out when Scene Preston opened, I figured 97/98 ish.

Just that more legit companies are interested to take out consistent ad space after seeing how good the mag is and are willing to invest in it, and they don’t need to promote Route One as much

On the plus- any photo of Helena in a mag is the sickest

Or the Billy’s skateshop with cheap Vision 1400s only in white?

Thought that was Rollerblade the brand? Either way, it was a real word salad too, where they were honestly pitching buying 2 pairs at fellas to try something new on a date with a girl. “You’ve tried everything, dinner, movie. Hell, you’ve even been bowling…” Maybe Shiner were the distributor at the time? 1991 or so anyway.

Can’t read the top one. I think it’s one for a quid or four for a pound or something like that.

I wonder if you can still get away with that these days?
Old thrashers were great for that too.

I’m afraid those were real. Fake DMs with glow-in-the-dark neon soles? Lars Tetens’ metal skateboards? A bit of fabric that can be worn as a bandana or a boob tube? Late '80s Thrasher’s got you covered.

As usual I’m a few days behind, but I know one of the guys from Super Eight and he’s 100% legit. Bit younger than me but grew up in the same Notts village. He was on Adio back in the day and got a decent amount of coverage. The other main guy I’ve never met but I’ve only heard good things about him…

Might not be bricks and mortar but it’s definitely skater owned…

Issue two already?!

Yes, I’m pretty sure that this issue had that ad on the back page. I was so confused when I saw that. Hilarious that it ran for years. Had no clue.

Those premium-rate ‘How to get girls’ phone lines were a total waste of money too.

Black and yellow! Oof.

Plenty of scooter ads around 1990.
