Hope this doesn’t affect this place ……
Forums preparing to shut down
I made a new topic out of @Chopper 's post. This issue was flagged to me earlier by @markg and I didn’t really think anything of it after skimming the subject but the perspective from LFGSS (that I’m sure some of us were memebers of) made me sit up a bit.
I still have to digest and read up properly on what the implications and risks are but it seems there’s a very real possibility we may have to shut down or move somewhere else…
It’s rubbish, I’m still hoping that there will be some amendments to avoid places like this being collateral damage. I get why the legislation is coming because the tech twats won’t get their own houses in order otherwise. But it’s just not been given enough thought.
Is there any reason why this act will be a massive step change? It sounds bad but in reality it’s likely to have some immediate targets that don’t include fan sites and forums.
I wouldn’t worry about it too much. As long as you have a policy of removing/blocking spam and porn you should be ok. There’s no realistic way to fine this place as it’s not profit making, and the last resort is to block the site from UK ISPs which isn’t likely or even that bad if it happens.
Hopefully the forum software will be updated with some compliance tools. The cookie act has been in place for years and most sites still don’t comply. It has been the case forever that the site owner is liable for any hate speech/spam/illegal shit, particularly if they take no action to deal with it or remove it.
*I’ve been making money from creating advertising websites for decades and from what I can work out this isn’t aimed at publishers it’s aimed at big tech and their platforms. Illegal content has always been subject to takedowns and legal action so that’s nothing new. The threat of big fines is squarely targeting big profit and big tech firms. For all the flack it gets, Twitter/X has everything in place to comply already with its community notes, login to view content, and authenticated user system.
Ah FFS , bloody hope we can stay here as said in above posts . Seems fucking nuts to why other forums are shutting down .
Presumably there will be legal backlash when this comes into force? It reads like the antithesis of what the internet was ‘supposed’ to be - free and open communication.
Without user forums the internet becomes a wasteland of like 5 websites
Sell the forum to me and I’ll run it from Australia. Change names to nottheukskateforum
What the fuck is this.
So Facebook is cool or Instagram which is run by Facebook but fuck any independent forum. Wack.
