But seriously, it’s a bummer to hear someone say this. I always thought of the Sheff scene being as welcoming as fuck. From working in the skate shops bitd, I always thought that any skaters new to Sheff seemed stoked to get here.
Nah this was way before Dev. (Love Ronny and Brow ha) Purely cruising the street looking for spots. Crucible was the usual place that was vibey. Not gonna call anyone out because there are loads of reasons why people SEEM to be vibey but probably were not. Just at the time it felt a funny place. We still went because we were thirsty for new places.
As I said, it was only for a while, Sheff was totally the opposite later on but we visited way less.
Tubb was a very friendly dude when most kept themselves to themselves.
Yeah I get you, totally. Things were vibier back then wherever you were, or at least it seemed that way. Old guy opinion incoming: I remember skating in Manchester as a kid, late 80s early 90s, it seemed like a big friendly get-together for kids from all over the north west. But then mid-90s, it got vibey, you were made to feel like an outsider if you weren’t a local, that sort of thing. Glad those days have gone.
Definitely. It was the culture at the time, there were people that followed the trends and others were just themselves. Joel was always super nice too so it’s not painting Sheff as a whole particularly. Other cities we visited at the time were similar, Brum had a mixyure of vibey and super super nice. Crazy times. But i’m also aware that I probably came across as a kook aswel ha.

I thought it was super welcoming, Beall, Greg Somerset, POH, Timmy, Dead Dave, Ronnie, Dave Dave, Jerome were all so friendly (too many to name really), then Burrell moved up a year after I was there. I always thought people were sound and welcoming.
Baines gave me Saturdays in Story when I first moved.
I loved it, just my anxiety destroyed me in my final year at Uni so I probably wasn’t much fun!
Must be 95/96 ish.
Although this was meant to be a pro Tubb thing rather than a neg Sheff thing.
