UK SOTY 2023 - nominations thread

So people have suggested 20 different skaters. Of those, 10 have put out some sort of high-ish profile part this year so far (that does eliminate Dale, Evan Johnson and Hinson though, who are still to drop something) so they’re the people who will end up in the poll.

That is unless we have any latecomers who want to nominate some skaters?

Perhaps Hinson could be compared to Paul raegen in regards to public perception and difficulty finding conventional sponsors.
Paul didn’t jump on rails like Hinson but they’re both outliers and think it’s fair to say PR was quite exceptional in some regards.
Both are quite pleasant from all accounts too, but for whatever reason just didn’t quite gel with the general public.

@Londonskater ruined Hinson for me. After the roll up comment I couldn’t ever unsee it.

I’m so sorry.

But also, as I have said on here in the past - respect where it is due. He’d heard of some (non-existent) beef between a couple of people I know which he felt he was seen as fuelling.
It wasn’t the case at all, but he bumped into me and asked me for five minutes to clear the air.

I think that’s a really cool thing to do, rather than just continue the weird vibes.

I’ve also seen a load of new clips of him and its gnarly. Sadly, no need to buy into Travis Perkins shares any longer. Bummer. Was gonna make my million when that Zero part dropped.

Confused

@neddy was commenting on the miles of wooden run up used in his last part and the filmers desire to seemingly give that “we’ve built a skatepark out here!” vibe to said video.

Sadly, that focus seems to have passed now. No more wooden rollercoasters to the rail.
Sales are down at Travis Perkins.

No worries. We all do as we enter these advanced years of our life.

@Londonskater wasnt that into but when you wrote that I pissed myself and think about it everytime I see a wooden roll up now.

Hinson beef? I just thought he was another one of those dudes that absolutely ripped but wasn’t in the cool gang basically.

Nothing remotely interesting. He did an ABD, sorta. Boring and nothing for anyone to get their knickers in a twist over.

I feel like the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was making everyone feel like they aren’t in the cool gang. Ha ha.

You know what I mean though!

Those who got mag coverage and those who didnt. Someone bangs out a bad part for Darkstarr, if it was on a U.K. company 7/8 years ago people would have cared more.

Anyway I don’t know what my point is wooden roll ups are weird and people care about London more. Also manc.

Yeah, I totally get what you mean. And you are right.

I will say this though; people care about London, sure…but being London doesn’t make you cool.

And I agree with you there!

Miss Leeds and Sheff seemingly like epicentres for the U.K. but I can’t keep with skateboarding in general let alone specific scenes. So that’s on me probably m.

Feel like 2005-2010 I was in Leeds every couple of months.
I miss it.

That said, parents are moving to North Yorkshire. Just completed on a place on Monday.
I’ll visit them a bunch and swing by Leeds/Wakey/Sheff, etc. every time for sure.

I’ll have to add Andy Davidson on the basis that the boardslide at the tiles is fucked up.

Might not be this year, but I think we’re gonna see Rio (the lovely lad who did the insane 5050 at Stockwell) do some insane stuff next year.

Bushy is incredible, his new part is gonna be wild.

Tom Knox should win Skater of the damn world at this point.

Dee Collins in unreal too

Barney Page for skating the John O Groats to Lands End.
Layth Sami for eventually getting the nod in his early 30s and aging like a fine wine.
Jordan Thackeray for just killing it.
And Tom Knox too of course

If so sick as I haven’t seen anything from him for a bit.
