Curious about how people are feeling about the current geopolitical situation given that the US appears to be unlikely to back NATO article 5 obligations (if one NATO member is attacked, everyone else in NATO piles in).

I voted that it will probably blow over just because a major war wouldn’t be in anyone’s best interest but there’s definitely a chance that it won’t. I feel like Putin might have had enough of trying to expand Russian borders for the time being at least and it all depends if he can save enough face in a settlement. But I was just reflecting before that the whole thing is absolutely mental. 2025 and the fate of the world is in the hands of two old men with fragile egos acting like they’re kings. Utterly fucked.

Maybe I have been reading too much geopolitical stuff, but the seismic shift we are currently going through is nuts. US can’t be trusted for anything. From rock solid democratic partner to unreliable, mercurial, despot-loving fuckwits. Completely screwed themselves by upsetting just about every supply chain and dismantling the constitution. Trump’s aiming for a third term already! Despite being a 2 term max in the constitution. Groundwork is already being laid.

Russia takes currently taken land in Ukraine? They have consistently said the Baltics are next. They’ve invaded Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Ukraine (twice) since 2nd world war. Numerous treaties not to invade ignored. Incredible that people seem to think this time it will be different. If the war stops they are just going to use the time to re-arm, like they did every time before. Russia needs a bloody nose. It’s not going to stop.

He said 2 days ago that Ukraine started the war with Russia. He’s already talking about relieving Russia of sanctions. He could easily halt arms sales to Ukraine and Europe. There are US bases dotted all over Europe, god knows what he’s going to do to lean on us.
He’s repeating Kremlin talking points constantly. It’s frightening.

Russia won. Best case scenario for the world, apart from Ukraine, seems to be for Ukraine to just accept whatever “peace deal” gets written for them by Putin’s american ball gurglers. Doubt they’d every agree to cede any territories though.
Hard to imagine any other scenario that ends peacefully for the Baltics or wider Europe.
Apparently the Mrs has been discussing plans for family to come stay with us if they have to. Apart from FIL who would stay and fight. Feels very strange to have that kind of conversation.
Also, Trump using this situation to blackmail Ukraine for mineral rights makes me sick to my stomach. Hope he gets hanged one day. He won’t though.
