I think it’s fixed. But if not:
- Go to your preferences here.
- Change ‘Default Home Page’ to ‘Latest’:
- Don’t forget to go to bottom of the page and hit ‘Save’.
I think it’s fixed. But if not:
Nah, fuck that, thanks for everything you and the mods do to keep this island of sanity running
Only true comparison I have for UKSF is Slap.
Slap is a bit of the wild west which can definitely ruffle a few feathers but also has it’s appeal as a bastion of “free speech”. And even if people deny it, they lurk hard. Also, over the last few years as skate culture has (finally) opened up a bit there’s been a noticable clean up. Although you can’t default styling on you’s and Chris Cole’s allegations getting stickied.
With slap as a comparison, I think UKSF has matured a lot, maybe too much even I think it’s changed for the better. The only criticism I can offer is somehow this forum is a bit too bland for younger people but to remedy that I’d like to know what new/younger posters would want?
Both these forums are social media yet kids these days are already active on much bigger social media platforms so why add another? It might even be that young kids are wary of social media so are actively avoiding platforms..?
Finally, could UKSF popularity be linked to the number of skate events getting promoted? I feel like 10 years ago N26/UKSF had a lot more traffic and posting linked to actual events where people met in real life.
There are so many factors, like N26 was part of Sidewalk, so events and such would almost automatically be pushed on to there too and one promoted the other. The magazine generated a big monthly outside interest in the forum, even if just in passing that this forum doesn’t have now.
I also feel like forums are also an old internet format. Its kind of a slow way to do social media now too. Are they a bit boring even, for today’s yoof? I wonder if even Reddit is in decline with new younger users?
With Facebook groups, group chats, instagram, YT and such I don’t think people are seeking out niche forums as much. They now have a lot bigger, brighter and faster formats competing for their attention.
I’d imagine joining a small established forum could be daunting for a lot of people as well.
Slap has never appealed to me as I can’t get past the quote fest one post can turn into, mixed in with millions of sigs.
iirc you can hide sigs as a setting if you have a user account
As I see it:
Is this channel of social media dying out? Absolutely. Will younger generation actively seek it out? Probably not. Will it have the type of content younger generation want? Probably not. Do I care about any of this? A little bit, and probably not as much as I should. But the good news is, as we are all about the same age, we’ll all die together and no one will be around to care if the forum isn’t up.
Part of me is 100% happy with what we have here. It’s pleasant, mature and largely self-policing as well as hilarious at times. But weirdly I think we consume much the same content as the younger generation and with the ‘wisdom’ we have over years and years of participation, our segment has a valid opinion whether anyone likes it or not. Even more so as our generation are largely running the corporate side of skateboarding right now.
Not sure where I’m going with this, sorry for going on and on.
I only started this thread as I wanted a better name to print on some sweatshirts, haha. Think I’ll just stick with it now!
Can we still make some merch
I agree entirely.
I think the new format was great on desktop but confusing (for old brian cants) on mobile.
All I’m bothered about is talking to my mates in here x
Partridge quote with small uksf logo.
I’d say Reddit probably takes the few nerds that would find this place otherwise.
I remember checking on Reddit first to see if there was an N26 subreddit or similar before finding this eventually.
As for new recruits (if they are even wanted) maybe could have a pinned introduce yourself thread or something along those lines to show this place is open to new people. Even if the kids these days probably have no idea what an online forum is.
It’s still sick to me that something I used to lurk hard on from the early 2000s is still around with the same people. Something very cool about that.
Yer that’s why I love it.
Slap is still very active but a recent poll they did on age there showed that there was basically nobody using it under about 25. If young people aren’t going there then they aren’t gonna come on here where people talk about sheds more than skateboarding and shit on just about anything that’s happened since after 2005
Bit harsh
2005 was cardigans and painters caps
Yeah why isn’t everyone skating in autumnal colours to art school indie anymore ffs
Just UKSF is good with a cool logo. Got quite a few talented folk on here who could design a good one. Could involve a hoover, not those janky shark ones though.
Would it be at all possible to set up a relationship with Skateboarder’s Companion? Obviously not as close, because they’re two separate entities but be the official unofficial forum for TSC?
I’d also be down for contributing more to the Patreon subscription towards stuff that might attract attention? Sponsoring/hosting events or a physical trophy (albeit an appropriately ropey and poor quality one) we can send to our nominated UKSF SOTY? A podcast? An advert in the mag? I don’t know how realistic any of these suggestions are or if they’d be any good, or if they’re just the mad ramblings of a fantasist.
Events would be a cool and an advert in print could be jokes.
Dime style, in part with Shark. Insta kids turn up to a massive skateable shark vacuum cleaner.
