I don’t think Toms over exposure is his fault, it’s everyone else’s. He’s just skating. It definitely makes his legacy harder for younger people to understand though.

Maybe he is milking it by still being pro, but if his board sells Flip aren’t gonna stop making it. And what’s he gonna do, get a real job?

If you showed someone whose been skating for 6months Penny footage from the last 10 years, and your argument is that he had the best style of all time. They would think you are taking the piss.

He is a fucking legend to me anyway, hometown skateboarder, rode for the local shop. Sick.

Actually, he did up it and do it better. And still, you are left with that part.

@BvS - I bet those Cheech and Chong boards sell like mad still. I really wouldn’t be surprised if it was their best selling board still.

For sure. I remember when Sorry came out, I knew of Toms legacy, had seen the Sidewalk pop shove cover and understood the mystery, but even then thought, meh, his part isn’t that great compared to Geoff’s. And that was 18 years ago.

At least he still had his style then, so you could understand.

Thats when I started skating, but we had the guys at SS20 with all the stories and shit, so we knew.

It is, I’m sure.

I remember someone telling me that Tom isn’t getting paid by Flip, they pay his royalties into a trust and he gets paid a wage from that, rather than having access to whatever stupid amount Cheech and Chong has earnt him.

Pretty sure its something like that Nav.

Hahahahahaha.

I wouldn’t say he’s milking it if he still actually skates a lot. It’s been a mixed bag in terms of his footage for the last decade or so but I think he’s looked a lot more solid just recently, for a while I was really worried that his style had almost gone wrong entirely.

Does he give a fuck? Why should he? All he’s done is skateboard and if his friends still want to pay him for that, why wouldn’t he take it? It’s not like he’s sitting there doing a promotional Instagram account or anything. He’s just doing his thing and other people are filming it.

I also think that legacy pros are a good thing.

Like, Gonz isn’t changing the face of street skating anymore and Alva (ugh) isn’t pushing levels of shit kickturns.

…but they have their fanbase and era. So long as they are decent people and aren’t racists or rapists (Which is odd with Alva, really) then continuing a pro board run is a good thing.

Forgetting curation issues with Tom for a second; once certain skaters reach a certain point, I feel like people just want to see these top tier pros push around and skate, rather than push boundaries.

Thats why that Greco video works so well right now whereas if he’d put that out in 2004, people would have laughed at him.

With the amount of people of our generation who never stopped, and all the people coming back to it nowadays, it’s right that folk can still buy a Penny or Gino board rather than only being able to choose between the people currently putting parts out.

Exactly, hence the popularity of that recent Kalis clip. Though that clip did make it look like he’d been skating more regularly.
