Video Camera/filming setup question

Get a hmc 150e (about £500) with an opteka (peanuts) if you’re filming with your mates and want something that feels similar to vx but is hd, can crop to 4:3 if you want too

Get a a shitty dadcam, optional cheapo fisheye taped on, done.

Crazy to think that I bought one when they came out back in 2010/2011 and it cost me nearly £3,000.

Also technically none of the Panasonic cameras are really HD. They shoot an upscaled 1080p on a 720p sensor, which is considered SD these days.
Sorry for being a nerd.

1080i right?

Looking at UK ebay, secondhand Panasonic GH5’s seem super reasonable.

@jwdharris16 what should I get? Want to film a proper project with a couple of people.

That was on the HVX200 I believe, the HMC series is fully progressive scan afaik

It’s all entirely up to your preference and the look you’re going for. Obviously I’d avoid VX these days as they’re a fucking pain in the ass and DV isn’t a supported codec anymore.

The Panasonic cameras are a good route if you’re familiar with them, and you can get a variety of fisheyes to fit if you can’t find/afford the century fish for it. I’d go for the HMC range though, as they take SD cards which are obviously far cheaper and more accessible than the P2 cards. I imagine that they’ll be far cheaper these days as they’re considered “old tech” in the camera world outside of skateboarding.

As @nav says, the GH4/GH5 is a good route, but you’ll need a few extras to make it usable for skate filming, in a very similar way to my Blackmagic setup as I mentioned above.

Do you have a look or feel you like/videos you’d take as inspiration? That might help your setup choice.

4:3 HD would be sick.

I had a HVX200 with Xtreme Century and multiple VX1 MK1 set ups. But can’t be fucked with SD

4:3 HD is something you’d have to ask someone else about unfortunately, I’ve never dabbled in it.

The GH5 can do 4:3.

Pretty sure there was a Manchester video filmed in HD 4:3 on a GH something.

iirc it might have been Cottonopolis

Lots of bundles on ebay:

I’d say get onto the Canon XF series, such lovely cameras to use. Light and they work pretty schweeeet. Combine it with a Mk1 or a Mk2, bada bing.

I’m looking for a second one to get the er, second angles 'n tha like.

I filmed the entire vid I done last time with it, put into 4:3.

The mic on the XF1 isn’t too bad as well, IMHO.

OK so have just got a Sony fs5 with canon 8-15mm fisheye.

I get shutter speed aperture iso but don’t have a clue about picture styles n stuff.

I don’t have an external 4ik recorder so should I shoot using the internal 4K or would I be better shooting HD 1080p ?

Also do I have to shoot in one of the S Log ( 3 ?) And have to colour grade in post ( which I dont have a clue about )Or can use a picture style and tweak the settings ? Mack Sharff was saying something about making it more contrasty and making the blacks darker but couldn’t remember which picture style he used.

Also only have the fisheye at the moment. I’m a bit clueless really any help would be much appreciated. I’m kind of thinking might go to New Bird this afternoon and test stuff out

Thanks.

Ps is gain like ISO or is that totally wrong ?

I

Good tips there

Just had a look on ebay. Something like this looks pretty good for the money. I haven’t got the time now but I’d be really tempted by this if I did

Another quick question regarding editing

Would the free version of Davinci Resolve do evetything I need it to do or am I better off subscribing to Adobe Premiere Pro or something ?

Thanks

Iv had no issues with it, but I’m making super basic insta clips and that’s it

Anyone after a VX set up?

Resolve is RAD. Well worth learning it and the free version is fully useable. I think the studio version offers more support for 4K and above.
