As an alternative, modern Chinese manufacturers like 7Artisans, Samyang and Brightin Star now make incredible quality fisheye lenses for Canon and al the major brands at a fraction of the ‘official’ price.
Mostly manual focus, but I always think autofocus is a bit pointless on a fisheye anyway- with such a huge depth of field you have to work hard to get anything out of focus

He will need and want the Canon, not some Chinese knock off - if you aren’t filming New Balance videos then yer that might do it

For non-pros, Chinese lenses are impressive nowadays. They aren’t the crap knock-offs they used to be
Nah I’m no pro but I know the lens I like to use and the Canon 8-15 does the job the best. There is a new Laowa 8-15 that I’m gonna get as it looks very good for the price. But anyway, I found a Canon on eBay this morning and bought it

To be fair, the Samyang cine lens kit isn’t that bad at all. We’ve got two boxes of them at work and for corporate and short film stuff they do a good job. The kicker is that if you have a fault or any damage you’ll need to send them back to South Korea for inspection as there are next to no Samyang lens specialists in Europe.

Bought a Samyang 8mm in 2011 which is still being used today! No idea whether it’s good or not but the filmer I gave it to seems to be into it

I mix and match my lens brands.
I have a Fujifilm camera. I have their pro-level standard zoom (16-55 f2.8, equivalent to 24-84mm in full-frame), a couple of fast Voigtlander primes and a cheap Samyang fisheye, which has been pretty good for the money.
