Cars

You need to be really careful with that shit. My father in law had the same thing, was entitled to a courtesy car but insurers referred him to a CMC. Other driver’s insurance took the CMC to court saying they were trying to rip them off and as it was in the father in laws name all the court proceedings were issued against him. It was a proper mess. Probably worth checking if you should be getting a courtesy car direct from your insurers.

Also, £280 a day! Are they trying to rent you a Bugatti Veyron or something?

Exactly what happened to us. Apparently 99% of the time the insurance companies come to an agreement before it goes to court. Very stressful for us as the person who got crashed into!

I think that’s the business model, hugely inflated rental costs and then not returning your car for months racking up a huge bill.

I almost agreed in the heat of the moment and pressure from these nutters. Declined their contract after reading up and discovering a CMC is just a credit agency. Vultures everywhere!

When I was on the phone the guy said ‘Do you like top brand vehicles?’

I said ‘errr, I guess’.

Reading through the contract he’d justified the price by saying I need top end cars for my lifestyle or something. Mad haha.

I’ve got a 2015 VW Golf 1.6 diesel, solid wee car but i want a bit more boot space

Convince me a van is a very bad idea, it is isn’t it?

Upside (while the trend lasts) is to get one, pay over the odds a bit but have it for a couple of years and sell it for a grand more than you bought it for.

It is if you ever want to carry more than two (maybe three depending on the van) people. Estate car?

Vans are great I’ve got a 2016 T6 I bought second hand in 2018 and it’s never had an issue. I know loads of people with vans as their main car, go for it.

I can’t convince you. Went to morocco last year and they gave us a VW caddy instead of the compact we’d booked and it was one of the best cars I’ve used and I cannot see why everyone is not driving around in these things. 5 spacious seats, loads of room in the boot.

I’d buy one but I feel like you. Might just go for it.

Happened to me from the other side. Caught a brand new Audi e-tron’s rear quarter panel with the point of my wing mirror. Minor stuff. All insurers informed and bob’s your uncle, heard nowt more for 6 months. Then I get a really scary court summons letter asking for payment of costs. The claim management company had sorted out a Merc GLE350d as a like-for-like replacement car while there’s was repaired. Total bill was almost £15k, only about £2.5k of which was parts, labour etc. Courtesy car was for 2 weeks, with £x a day for extras like wheel cover, glass cover, tyre cover and so on. Was something daft like £800 a day all said and done. Rang my insurer and they said, “let me guess, that’s from name of company? Don’t worry we’ll sort it.” Heard no more but it’s a fucking scam.

Edit: Just looked them up, was Winn solicitors. They’re directly owned or linked to the claim management firm. I’ve got the letter with itemised costs somewhere if anyone’s interested.

Reserved an Ionic 5. Slight giddy :upside_down_face:.

Had Tesla for 4 years and down to 1 petrol Volvo xc40 for a bit to save some money

When I get a second car again I might not get an EV. They lose their value and not as cheap as you think. Electricity bill down £150 a month since getting rid of it but did do 80k miles in 4 years in it

They’re great to drive though

They’re really nice, those.

They’re really cheap to run if you can usually charge at home overnight but I’m guessing at 80k miles in 4 years you were using some public chargers which is absurdly expensive.

they look wicked

Never used public chargers besides the odd super charger on long trips. Plugged it in overnight almost every single day though

Don’t get me wrong they’re great, but the cost of buying or leasing one vs a small economic combustion engine doesn’t make sense for a lot of people still

I’m probably going to use the company scheme to get an EV as I need the tax benefits but with 2 kids in nursery I’m holding out until September when eldest starts school

Not sure what I’ll get, maybe polestar 4

Yeah, the depreciation means that there’s some good used ones about, though. But I’m so over combustion engines and their endless variety of failure modes. £2.5k in bills on the van in the last year, all engine related.

100000% agree

There’s something so satisfying knowing your car is basically a battery with 4 wheels attached
