My mate bought an Audi A3 at an auction quite a few years ago, and the police were waiting for him (or whoever the buyer might have been) outside. Turns out this motor previously belonged to Kevin ‘Gerbil’ Carroll (although it’s not the A3 he was shot in) and since it’s tradition for gangster rivals to buy their victim’s car and torch it, the Old Bill wanted to know who my boy was and what his plans were.
It seems a bit cheap and that mileage is a bit scary. Things like the air suspension can have a tendency start to go at around 100k. I’d always need a FSH and in this case preferably from a Land Rover dealer. Private sales have never really gone that well for me from personal experience. If you do buy privately then getting an AA comprehensive vehicle pre purchase inspection isn’t at all a bad idea.
From what I have learned through various people/small time business owners is that if you can’t afford a large ongoing maintenance cost then stay well away from any range rover type thing. It’s just not worth it just for the status.
A friend has had a handful of the newer shape and they always seemed to have problems. He loved them though, he’s had more cars in a year then I’ve had hot dinners though
Alright fuck this thing then.
Yep, air suspension on RR are dog shit. Mate had a sport from brand new to his spec and it was in the garage 3 times in the first 4 months with parts failing, one being the air suspension
10k-15k can get you a decent jap 4x4/cross over with most likely a few years on warranty left as they tend to be 5 year ones. Decent running cost insurance and tax. Surprising engines too.
Think Mick said it but check the dealerships out, most offer 1-2yr warranty on used now if it’s out of warranty when you buy it. Plus they tend to look after you.
I always take my Land Rover to Land Rover for servicing/ work and the Audis go to Audi. It costs more than a smaller independent. Even though they probably aren’t any better. Although when it comes to resale it makes a difference with a stamped FSH and receipts for any work done. Buying from a dealer you have comeback if/ when anything goes wrong as well.
I just got burned on a few cars when I was younger and impulsive. I think it pays to take a bit of time over deciding what to buy. There’s nothing worse than buying a car only to end up saddled with thousands of pounds worth of repair costs straight off. You never really have confidence in it after that.
Really pretty keen to get it from a dealership rather than from some oddball in an NCP or something.
Black old shape diesel Range Rover sport on refurbished 22" alloys with budget tyres. Possibly the riskiest private second hand car purchase it is possible to imagine! These cars are expensive to run and running it on a shoe-string just means you have to tart it up and sell it to some mug punter before the big bills hit! Add to that the fact that 22" alloys (which required a pre-sale refurb due to smacking curbs daily for the past two years) can screw your suspension and you know where this is heading!
I’d steer away from that one.
My money would go on a recent Japanese car, or a Japnese 4x4 if you really have to go that route for some reason. Alternatively as Spanky said any car they made loads of, because you have lots of choice and they’re easy and cheap to maintain.
Passats are really good. E-Class Mercs are good but you’d have to go with an older one.
Also…if you know nothing about cars you can still look for some obvious warning signs - missing service history, loads of owners, budget tyres, cracked/fogged up lights, rusty bits or big panel gaps, and general evidence it’s been neglected. You can usually get a lot out of meeting the owner, but it’s definitely more risky and time consuming finding a good car privately.
I just want to say that i’m not immediately in the market for a new car, but will be getting one in the next 6 months or so - this thread alone has been more valuable than any motoring/car specific forum or anything found online. This forum is a treasure trove of real knowledge.
Hello!
Thanks for all this. Will investigate the above just now.
Got the reg mot checked , a couple of fails and advisories for the lamp but not much else in terms of serious faults
I aspire to be in an SUV.
speaking of wagons, I’d love to get an RS6. those things look like they fuck off.
Damn. Now I’m in a quandary.
What about this? It’s parked next to a famous spot, too. On the other side of that you’ve got that tiny cobbled bank to five foot of vert and a concrete edge
Actually not sure about the boot.
This looks perfect. And it goes on snow.
I’d check a Range Rover forum for common faults at that mileage.
Those both look better than the Range Rover!
Would you consider a mini Clubman? They’re pretty practical with those barn doors at the back.
