Family dog is an Irish Water Spaniel, great nature and as mad as a box of frogs…

I think that comes with the territory with spaniels. Mine’s completely crackers. She’s a perma-pup, always soaking wet and always covered in sand .

Mine always looks like he’s wearing a ghillie suit. A magnet for grass, leaves, twigs and other detritus. As you say, constant puppy mode. And I’m always surprised by the never ending range of emotions he can convey with his stupid face.

Rubbish pics, she won’t stop moving!

Oh mate she’s lovely! Try and enjoy this next mental 6 weeks where you’ll wonder why you ever decided to get one, it’ll be worth it!

Haha - she has been good so far, but I think a bit bewildered as it has been a big day for her.

Yeah man, kind of a crazy story, I suppose we were meant to cross paths.

Been challenging as we don’t know what the fuck we’re doing yet. She’s lovely though. Not as hard work as the kids and she’s growing.

Our two cats aren’t keen. The eldest just looks at her and gives it the WTF and the younger cat has had to leg it a few times to escape.

That’s a beautiful dog. Does she need loads of exercise? Spaniels seem quite hyper

Yeah, we do 2-3 short walks per day and as much play as possible. Trained some basics but tbh can’t wait to get to the proper training in September as she can be quite difficult to manage - over excited and yeah, hyper.

Will likely need much longer walks when she’s a bit older. I’ll have to check the dog ownership instructions :flushed:

Yeah, that’s kind of par for the course. Mine’s 4 years old now and gets two walks a day - 5am for an hour or so and at some point later in the day for 1-2 hours. She still wants to play a lot too. You can substitute play and mental stimulation for walks occasionally too - if, for instance, it’s a full on storm outside for the umpteenth time in the week and you’re over it, then the garden and indoor play will be enough for mine.

She finished top of the class at puppy school and is still bananas. There are two speeds - crackers, belting around the beach or garden or upside down on her back, legs in the air, asleep.

Over time though she has developed a sense of empathy and can sort of read the room now and does alter her behaviour depending on the situation. She loves routine. I have never known such a curious/ nosy dog. She has to know what’s going on/ what’s happening over there/ what’s in the bag etc. For the most part it’s hilarious and endearing. Occasionally though, I find find myself wondering why I had to buy a clever dog and not another dozy retriever

This is the big thing with spaniels in my experience. So long as mine gets a walk in the morning and one in the evening, and his allotted breakfast, dinner, half hour mental playtime, post-dinner treat and around 20:30 belt around the garden and have a big drink from the outside bowl (because the inside one won’t do) he’s perfectly happy to sit and chill. On a normal day. For some reason, one of us being away or something it’s like he recognises there’s only half of us there to deal with his requests so he relaxes his rules.

Despite what people say with spaniels being wild, they do noticeably calm down. Ours is three now and remembering back to the puppy stage I thought I’d never have a relaxed evening ever again!

Last month we came home to find Charlie (ginger) laying in the garden dead. It looks like he was punctured by a dog, it was only a year since he lost his back leg due to being run
