Covid

The papers have decided that anyone who brings up captain toms Barbados trip is a vindictive heartless troll just seething with jealousy. I mean I could’ve told them that anyway but it doesn’t change the facts

I don’t really trust the general public in their opinion of “heroes” seeing as they seem to celebrate fuck tards most of the time

If I were offered a free seat from BA for a trip to the Bahamas I’d have to stop and think about it, then I’d politely decline. If I were famous I’d be thinking about optics.

… If I were 100 and it’s my last chance to go on holiday with my family you can bet your sweet ass I’d say yes.

He probably shouldn’t have done it, but hey ho, he was a nice fella.

100% but then I wouldn’t be deifying him (or anyone else)

If it was within the rules he was allowed, should he? That’s a different question entirely.

The governments choice of restrictions have allowed many people to do many things within the rules.

One of my work mates came back from Iceland on sunday and had to get a connecting flight from Heathrow to Manchester. He said Heathrow still seemed busy.

Taking a 100 year old relative across the world during a global pandemic when the whole county was tier 3 and 4 and about to be told most of us couldn’t even meet up in this country for christmas. What could possibly go wrong. His family taking him is irresponsible beyond words. Now the same people walking round calling anyone doing anything beyond what’s allowed covidiots are defending it.

Media all over the guys who traveled from Essex to some mountain in this country to go climbing and a ton of other cases simular things that didn’t involve family mixing and taken a 100 year old man abroad, as the infection rate was sky rocketing goes to show the double standards of people and the media.

I’m still shopping for my parents in their 70s so they don’t have to go out as many people are. I cannot see how taking him to Barbados is even defendable? Who actually thought that this was a good idea?

Are you saying it’s irresponsible because of what happened to him? Because I’d be inclined to guess that he didn’t give a shit. If you mean the general irresponsibleness of a family going abroad then yeah, not much to say on that.

At his age, going out in a strong breeze is dangerous. He was at the end of his life anyway, if his family were ok with the risks and they did it ‘safely’, I don’t begrudge the guy a few days in the sun. He seemed like a good bloke, who did a decent thing at a time of national crisis. Let him have a mojito on the beach. It’s bad optics and in a black and white world he shouldn’t have done it, but a lot of people do worse, and more often.

It’s the influencers flying off to Dubai we should be annoyed about. And the fact that we live in a country were its necessary to put a 100 year old man to work just to subsidise our health service.

Hmmm… so a 100 year old can go holiday but we should crucify 20 year olds? When it’s actually the government people should be mad at, but divide and conquer and all that. He was raising money off his own back, in a way that was within his capabilities. It’s hardly making him put in a 12 hour shift down the mine is it? The £1000 he initially set out to raise would of gone far, I’m not trying to take away from his service in WW2 and charity work in anyway for which he should be very much admired and respected for.

I’ve edited my comment to ‘influencers’ as thats really what I was getting at (20 years old just seemed to be the suitable age range). And the put to work comment was a joke, but I sort of meant that the media did seem to lean on him as some sort of perfect example of the British ‘we’re all in this together’ spirit all the while the Government are happy to take the money he raised but won’t properly fund areas of the country that need it.

Most people are doing their best, no ones perfect and at least he got to spend some time with his family given the circumstances.

I’m not judging either way but I can’t help but point out the massive double standards that keep coming up.

Look at these arsehole British skiers on a ski trip when travelling abroad isn’t a good idea. Both the students that got slaughtered in the papers and the ones who went to Switzerland but buggered off so they didn’t have to quarantine. On one hand

But captain tom and his family can do whatever they fucking like as he is a national treasure on the other hand .

Personally I think taking an elderly relative around the world was a terrible idea but that’s my opinion. The massive double standards of press and people depending on who we are taking about pisses me off so much more

I don’t know what to think. I can see both sides, we’re apparently happy to make exceptions for all sorts of travellers (footballers and such like) so I’m pretty sure if asked most people would have been cool with this old guy in particular having one last holiday. Also when you have British Airways approaching you with the offer of sending you to Barbados then I can see how that might have swayed their thinking about whether or not they should.

Mostly I just hope he went out okay because covid can be a horrible way to go.

I can imagine the younger members of his family being fairly keen to take that offer up while they still can.

Doesn’t count though. It’s Captain Sir Tom Moore.

I’m getting into this now, finally.

He was huge at one point, as long as he wasn’t an idiot with it all he should be doing okay still.

He squirrelled his fortune inside Bella Emberg then when Plastic notes became a thing he had to kill her and exchange them, didn’t realise how much was saved.
