Seriously yeah…but computers fuck up and get full and then an update happens and you lose everything
I’m loathe to start screen-staring all the time. I think I’ve satisfied my GAS for now tbh. I’m more focussed on getting everything integrated and chatting to each other. Got a little jam going with the rd6 drum machine and the s-1 the other day and it just was the best feeling.
I went for a good while without a computer and I loved it but my ideas outgrew what was capable, so I had to get a DAW. I don’t like the sound of in the box/interface even though it sould be cleaner but it just sounds sterile and lifeless so it’s way more effort to get a feel.
Hate to say it but unless you record music that is the same all the way through and all you’re doing is dropping things in and out and manipulating on the fly then a computer is essential for more complex editing and structure ideas.
Nothing is impossible though it just longer winded to do everything but I actually like that, feels like you’re creating like people did at the start rather than using all the shortcuts people have now.
I basically use a computer like a tape machine though I guess, I capture jams and cut and splice and then use it as a mixer to finish. I don’t use any plugins apart from some typical dynamics here and there.
Puters are evil! stay pure if you can.
Contradictory babble!
That was a journey
I thought you were saying the opposite of your final sentence!
I’m not anti daw at all. I do edits in audacity sometimes and the mpc one is basically a daw anyway. But i don’t think I’d have the urge to make stuff entirely on a computer, just lacks the tactile thing. I have considered getting a dedicated laptop + fl studio but im too far down the hardware route now.
By the way i got that tascam 24 track for £160 on ebay. So stoked. But i don’t have time to use it now im a dad…
Exactly! that’s the quandary. Love/hate etc
Ah nice on Jimvo. You’ll find some time back here and there.
Just a thought, the little Rolands have audio in, right? You should be able to play one or two through each other meaning you don’t need a mixer
That’s right yeah. So far I’ve got the two behringers (rd6 and td3), the two Roland airas (p6 and s1 - these get far and away the most use at the minute), an SP404 mkii (only just unboxed essentially, but needed more sample capacity) and a cheap midi controller I picked up second hand.
A mixer is good though as you have control over individual things. Just simple things like fading/ muting elements. Not easily done through audio in menus.
True. And fx sends are well handy. But for messing around jamming audio in can be a nice shortcut
Which midi controller is it? Any good?
It’s an akai mpk mini plus. I got it secondhand in decent nick for a good price. So far it’s the piece of kit that has confused me the most tbh.
Any of you clever people able to help a confused old man?
I’ve just got a mixing desk. Plumbed it all in today. My drum machine and 303 clone are coming through loud and clear.
However… my two Roland Aira boxes (P-6 sampler and S-1 synth) both have a really low signal level and the signal’s really noisy on both too. Lots of hiss.
Also whenever I tweak the device’s in-built reverb on the Roland s1 synth, the levels go apeshit loud and it’s absolutely drowned in reverb even when I’m only adding a small amount.
Any chance they need grounding?
I don’t need a new mixer but there was a good looking Rane MP24 on ebay not far from me so I had to get it
Nice. I’m currently lurking on a couple of old school Vestax mixers - a PMC20 and a PMC06T.
Post a pic of your mixer/setup. How are your channel gain levels?
What kind of leads are you using? S1 is stereo, the mixer may be mono, you might need a mono lead. Or the lead not plugged in properly/ faulty
I don’t think it’s the lead(s). You could be onto something with the stereo/mono thing though.
I’m using mini jack out of the s1 going into the mixer via a TRS adapter. Both the lead and the adapter are stereo I believe (two little ring things on the jacks of each, right?). I’ll post a pic.
I don’t think it’s the gain settings @notactuallyhere but appreciate the suggestion.
Edit: pic added. Am I going into the wrong channels? Should be going into the ones circles in yellow, not the ones circled in red perhaps?
Could it be a grounding issue? What power supply are you using on the P6? Assume it doesn’t have an earth wire.
Might be that, if the mic channels are analog/pre-amped.
