Drum machine / synth / sampler geekery

Ive got a couple of Stylophones - my Nan’s original one, a re-issue one from a decade or so ago & one of those awful drum pad ones that i picked up cheap from a charity shop.

Not particularly gifted with ability but really like messing about with them.

Didn’t know stuff like this existed…

…and now need to see how much they’re going to cost me.

Can’t fully work out what is going on there. Does it loop the stuff you put in the top bit?

That’s what it looks / sounds like to me. Then being layered(?) over that.

Could be fun to mess about with, and if you just had that you’d probably get something ok out of it,but I’d probably rather have a volca sample if we’re talking budget gear

I’ll have to Google that as I don’t know too much about drum machines / synths / samplers and feel like an imposter even posting in here.

I’ve had fun with various bits & bobs over time and lots of false starts but would be keen to learn.

If you want some advice, id say 100% start with a sampler. Which one is down to budget, cheap - korg volca sample, (not actually used one but im told they’re good) mid - sp404 ( J dilla used one in hospital to make donuts) or a used mpc 1000, or.for a bit more mpc one (above £550 i think which is still good compared to a pc and for what you get including a very decent software synth built in)

With a sampler you can do pretty much everything, any drum machine free, much easier to add effects and you can make any kind of music. Fancy making hip hop? Just get digging and you’re away. Dnb, techno, whatever. And if you want to add synths etc later an mpc is designed to work with them via midi which is very easy to work out.

If you want to start for almost nowt there’s an app called Koala which is about £2. Fun little sampler.

And this guy’s free samples are excellent

Thanks for this - will def check out the korg.
Appreciated.

A certain someone on here selling a sick mpc live 2… Fucking sell everything you have and buy that!

There’s 2 versions, do a bit of research and check eBay

fun options are the old Korg Elektribes too.

I’m not good at spending money (esp on things that aren’t essential) but after a bit of research these look good so I’ve managed to justify it to myself because…

I got a little bit of money for Christmas, it’s my birthday today, a stranger on the internet told me I might like one & I’ve had a couple of beers.

Added to cart / order placed.

Cheers!

Thanks!

Ha! You’re not wrong. I’ve been lining a few up throughout the week.

I’ve had a little play with it tonight, imported some Casio SK1 samples and picked up a few basic basics. So far so good.

Never used any volcas myself but they sound great.

Been messing with a different setup, borrowed d50 (the Enya keyboard) and using the little boss dr660 as drum module for the mpc

Here you go mate, mainly drums but some nice chord samples too. Quite a few here so you might want to cherry pick rather than trying to load them all up

Ha nice, I was always tempted to grab a D50 for nostalgia as Jarre did the whole of Revolutions on it. I did get a DX100 and used it quite a bit until it died.
