Equipment Thread

You know - I skipped through that vid and just don’t have the time, they’re just a nope from me. I’ll rewatch the recent Sal Barbier Memory Screen again instead haha.

Part of what is really interesting about standard hangar trucks is how they wear to an individual skater and the grind tricks they favor over time, the grooves created helping to give a personalised lock in if that makes sense. For me these GK things remove all of the interest and promote almost an anti-lock-in as you’ll have to skate to the trucks groove, rather than wearing in your own.

I’m now gonna STFU about Skateboard stuff until 2025

I had RipTide cups in all my sets of Indys and the trucks felt weird as most of them were new Indys made in China, those silly ones with the pivot that’s a tad too small for the original pivot cup. I replaced them with Ace AF1 cups and it’s much better now. AF1 cups are cheaper which is good considering the price of RipTide cups.
Hopefully this will help people whose setup has to sound right like me. :upside_down_face:

Mike give your swiss a proper clean out/service, bet that seized bearing will be good as new after

Doh, I meant the old ones were loose, but yeah the pivot thing was a little loose. All good now though. Will try the AF1 though if these don’t last.

Yeah, no doubt, it has been a while. Normally I just take the shields off and stick them in the bearing cleaner bottle. I’ve not done the full race and balls out job for years. It’d be a shame to get rid given their age and use so should pencil that in for when I set a new deck up.

@Mike fully agree on the truck groove thing. Not giving those new ones any time, seems like another pointless skateboard innovation. On the other hand I love this thread and all the equipment obsessiveness so please keep on keeping on

Also as Mark said those will be worth giving a clean and an oil. Expensive bearings are rescuable for sure

So it turns out that 7.875" deck is a 8" deck with a much deeper curve. Thought I much preferred flat decks but this is lovely

What did you get?

Magenta 7.875 deck instead of my usual 8 (also magenta). BBS wood

7.6" deck for me, being able to flip the deck without feeling like you’re on a boat is amazing!

Oh wow I don’t think I’ve had anything below 7.75 since about 2000. That’s awesome. What is it?

An absolute on sale Fabric deck, however I’ve recently put on a custom 7.75" my wife got me for my 40th but as soon as that’s done I’m heading back to the 7.6".
I always rode 7.75"s then briefly went to 8.0’s in the 2010s but I think it’s just too hard to flip if you’re shit (Like I am)!

Ah I rode Fabric for ages they were decent shapes

Turned 33 this week so treated myself to a new deck & trucks, Mrs treated me to wheels and a set of Reds so got an all new set up, cannot fucking wait to skate it.

Death Lurk 2 8”
Indy’s
Reds & Snot li’l Boogers.

In hindsight probably should have gone for a slightly larger wheel these being 48’s but decided this is just gonna be an indoor set up so i’m not going on my face on grit, i’ve got another set up I can use outdoors anyway.

Had a warped Magenta team board lying around, unwarped it with a homemade press, looked pretty straight after 10 days or so, thought I’d tart it up with a sharpie tonight. Kinda stoked on it now. It’s gonna be a good board for outdoor skates in harsh winter conditions.

Mate that’s so good! Interested in your home made press. Details?

Thanks mate.

I thought I had already posted pics of my “press” but I can’t find them anymore.
Calling that a press might be an overstatement, we’re talking about ghetto DIY shit here but it does the job.

I just put small pieces of wood under and over the board I want to straighten, an old straight board and bricks on top of it then wait for a week at least and let the magic happen. Saved quite a few boards using this technique.

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

Done very sketchily to take these pics for you right now, you want to make everything as good as you can to get your board straight.

Awesome. Don’t think ive ever needed to do this but good to know it’s relatively easy to do without special equipment

Yeah, you really don’t need much.

One of my mates runs a distribution and a shop, I help him as much as I can and regularly get boards from old stock for free in return, sometimes one of them gets warped… It’s good to be able to fix them as I like to reduce waste.

I should fix more of those so we could donate them to Skate Uganda or something once they’re straight again.
