Zero fucks given about the walnut side unit…
I’ve been following the online reviews of the new Grind King trucks: Ricky Glaser, Mogely, Big Deck Energy, Michael Relevant etc. Everyone seems to rate them - and sometimes they’re surprised that they do because GK has produced some gimmicky shit in the past. Like Krepers. And those trucks with the spark flints in.
The main negatives seem to be the orange version is horrible to look at, and the bushings get less turny when it’s very cold outside.
The main positive is that the grooves genuinely do seem to help locking in on grinds, especially on rails and coping. And the adjustable wheelbase is such a genius idea you wonder why no one has done it before.
Apparently they turn somewhere between Thunder and Indy - so not as sharp as the current generation of super-responsive Ace/Slappy/Lurpiv trucks.
I have some coming this month, so I’ll try them out and see if I like them.
oh man i kinda want to try that. .25 on either truck is kinda interesting. never ridden ventures
This is the GK version. I think it would let you move each truck 1/2” either way - do lengthen or shorten your wheelbase by up to 1”
argh my eyes
i wonder why the adjustable baseplate holes thing hasn’t taken off much before
There’s a lot going on in that photo
I’ve been on Ventures since 1988. Briefly on Thunders and Indys - bought one pair of each a few years apart but binned them off in next to no time. I know people dis Ventures for their lack of turn but I like them. I’ve always ridden the lows since they bought them out but I’ve just sized up my board and so have had to buy Venture 5.6s and they seem to only be available in one height option and they’re not low. I’m so set in my ways that I know it’s going to take some getting used to. Anyway, my ankle’s still jacked from a full tweak and ligament tear in November and so I won’t be setting my board up for a few more weeks. I think taking the stock bushings out and sticking some Bones ones in will take the height down a touch. Will have to see how it goes.
Got some Venture hi’s waiting for me as soon as the thunders get worn through. Although TBH the thunders are great
yeah i’m on thunder. i wouldn’t mind trying venture but i have no real reason to stop using thunders
Typical cycle of ‘these trucks are fine, but I’m a bit bored, I want to try something else’ then you’re stuck with trucks you don’t quite like and feel guilty about getting rid of for 2 years
you put into words exactly the part of the cycle i’m in. my setups for the last few years have been absolutely fine. no reason to change anything yet i’m still doing it. its both fun and annoying in equal measure (and expensive)
I’ve gone into hyperdrive with that. Indy, Ace, Slappy, Lurpiv and now GK.
I’ve been happy with them all - except for the inverted kingpin version of the Slappys, which kept working loose.
I recently changed bushings and that was a bit extreme for me, but I had valid reason and it has worked out fine
my wife would kill me if i had a constant stream of skateboard bits arriving at the house like that
pretty sure this guy is AI sent from big truck.
or deep baseplate
Looking at the grind king ones could you not just re drill holes in your base plates assuming there is enough room. Just measure twice drill once etc
I’d heard that was what Koston had been doing with his Ventures for years and that’s why the first Venture V8s are Koston sig trucks.
Up until my last couple of decks I’ve been drilling my front truck back to give me a 14’’ wheelbase and, as a bonus, a longer nose. Wheelbases just got longer as deck widths went up and I don’t like anything longer than 14. I can ride something a little smaller than that but only by a smidge, nothing longer though - my trick bag develops a bigger hole than usual at anything more than 14’’ .
I think redrilling a deck would have less of a margin for error than drilling new holes in baseplates with a handheld drill. Fortunately wheelbases seem to be coming back down to a sensible length of late so no more redrilling required - just got to watch the nose length now
Yes, you probably could, but I’d worry about my own ability to drill my baseplates accurately.
I think these new trucks have some things going for them - I’m looking forward to trying the grooved hanger shape on coping. But I also have some reservations - after years of riding firm trucks I’ve got used to having them looser and more responsive. I worry that the GKs might feel like going back to less responsive trucks. But if so, I’ll sell them and stick to my Lurpivs, which I really like.
