I mean they’re pretty terrible but so am I… not sure I’ll even notice the difference tbh, whereas bigger / softer wheels should be a bit less vibratey…
Can’t say I have experience with Route One trucks but I say with a fair amount of confidence proper trucks will make a big difference. Pricey but they’ll last you years
You will, in a good way. Trucks are very important.
Also try not to start sentences with “I mean”.
Just don’t get Krux
I will consider my wrist summarily slapped
Any recommendations? I’d love to splash out on a set of Independents but I can’t really justify at the mo.
Go on, do it, splash out on Indys, they’ll last you for ages and you’ll feel cool too. People will try and tell you they don’t turn well enough, but they don’t have Bones bushings in theirs so they don’t know what they’re on about.
Good trucks will help your turns become better and more responsive. But softer wheels smooth out rough tarmac. 78a, like the softest Ricta Clouds is supersoft and cushiony but some may find them too grippy. Somewhere in the mid-80s is a good compromise for many. 90-plus is softer than 100+ skatepark wheels, but the higher you go, the rattlier they’ll be on tarmac
Yeah but if I have nice kit people might think that I know what I’m doing!
I guess I’ll just have to skate loads, break the Route Ones and then I’ll have to upgrade. That’s always worked for me on MTBs to be fair…
also if you’re going to get bigger wheels might need to invest in riser pads to prevent wheel bite (when you turn and the wheel catches on the bottom of the board)
Aye I’ve popped some risers on already, so hopefully should be ok as long as I don’t go too big.
In my experience, a few seconds of watching me skate will put them straight on that.
Definitely will with me!
First of all sincere apologies for the incredibly lame question. I feel sheepish even asking it but which trucks do I need for an 8.25? Been skating 20 + years but never skated anything this wide before. Also I’d normally go into a skate shop and see but I’m going to have to order online as I have been given a voucher (I know, I know, support your local etc, and I would if I could but I seem to be lacking this disposable income thing people talk about, so a voucher is the only way I can afford it). Thanks in advance chaps.
Also conical wheels? What’s the coup? Worth getting or not? Subjectivity aside, I’d be interested to hear what you guys think.
Do you have a brand in mind?
A few brands have recently released trucks specifically for 8.25but they are called different things.
Thunder 148
Indy 144
Being the two most popular I guess.
But you can just as well use
Indy 139
Thunder 147
Venture 5.2
Cheers mate, appreciate that. Always used Ventures before but any of those 3 you mentioned are reputable!
Can’t remember where I got this info from but from a Venture pov…
5.0 (7.75 axle), 7.5 - 8.0.
5.2 (8 axle), 8.0 - 8.25.
5.8 (8.5 axle), 8.25 - 8.75.
I use 5.8’s on an 8.25.
Also, theres a handy guide on Slams Citys Skates site.
I have to commute to work now - been driving through winter, but now it’s drier, I will be skating.
Any recommendations for cruiser wheels? I ride a normal board (8.1 ish, 139/149’s can’t remember), but it’s too fucking far on shit surfaces for my STF’s. I will have a bag anyway, so plan to be able to swap over wheels if I decide I want to stop and skate a spot.
I want something sort of soft, reasonably wide and tall, but nothing ridiculously heavy or overly spongy.
Side question : What is Nick Boserio rolling on in all those insta/GX1000 clips?
Any thoughts?
cheers
I commute on a cruiser, I’ve got 55mm 85A Death Wish wheels and they are great. Not too big and heavy, so you can still ollie up curbs (and grind them too). Not too soft, so you can even slide a little if you want. Only downside is they were neon yellow but that’s all faded now so job’s a goodun.
I have OJ hot juice wheels on my cruiser posted at the top of the page, I think they were 58mm.
Soft but not overly bouncy like most filming wheels.
2 curious dogs was an alcoholic lemonade wasn’t it?
