Equipment Thread

Thanks laaaaads

EDIT: woah - the OJ’s are 78A - I won’t be able to slide them…85A’s sound more suitable…

Got some 55mm Blue Kryps used twice if they are any use to anyone on the cheap?

First of all sincere apologies for the incredibly lame question. I feel sheepish even asking it but which trucks do I need for an 8.25? Been skating 20 + years but never skated anything this wide before. Also I’d normally go into a skate shop and see but I’m going to have to order online as I have been given a voucher (I know, I know, support your local etc, and I would if I could but I seem to be lacking this disposable income thing people talk about, so a voucher is the only way I can afford it). Thanks in advance chaps.

Also conical wheels? What’s the coup? Worth getting or not? Subjectivity aside, I’d be interested to hear what you guys think.

The aim is to line your wheels up with the edge of your deck. With regular modern wheels and an 8.25” deck, Independent 149s will fit perfectly. The axle length is 8.5”, which is 1/4” wider than your deck. Which means the tiny rounded-off 1/8” of your axle either side. The wheels themselves will be perfectly aligned.

Old-school conical wheels are very wide. Modern versions, like Spitfire F4 Conical Full, are made with just a little conical cutaway on either side, rather than being rounded off with a bigger, more spherical radius. All this means you get more running surface and less cutaway for any given width of wheel, which is good for riding smooth, slippery surfaces like wooden bowls and ramps - you get more grip. I use the 99a conical full F4s because I mostly skate on wood surfaces

Interesting. I hadn’t seen 144s.
I’m riding the Theeve equivalent of 149s on an 8 3/8" deck - halfway between 8.25 and 8.5"

Well I stuck some 60mm / 78a Ricta Clouds on… Looks ridiculous, but it rolls really well on the crappy tarmac cruising for work (which is mostly what I do at the moment) so I don’t care.

Seems quite small for vert.

Yes - although it does have a 15.75” wheelbase, which is longer than most street decks. I did have a stage of using bigger boards and 169s, but I found I was becoming too reliant on stability, if that makes any sense. I wanted to feel a little less safe, to force myself to improve my skills.

Nothing wrong with big soft wheels bro

Just set this deck up, 8.38 Magenta w 149s, Ricta Naturals 54mm, Andale bearings, Jessup grip & indy bolts. Aside from the one blue wheel being kind of irksome these Ricta’s are fucking spot on and in my eyes I’d say they’re easily on par with F4s atleast in terms of slideability, longevity remains to be seen but I’m a month in no issues. They also seem to be relatively cheap in comparison, got mine for £30 outta Cycleworld but I’ve seen em on sale for £20.

I’ve been thinking about setting up a Chico inspired board. Best would be a pre-popsicle 1990/1991 shape and this caught my eye.

Then would come the truck and wheel planning.

Do it.

I’ve switched to a 159s set up these days and usually go for 9"+ shapes like that.

Strong and stable like a Tory govt

Posted back in January, would be interesting to see if they come to fruition

They look rad! Throw them on for the commute to work, take them off for the lunchtime schralp.

I used to skate with someone who did a bit of filming aswell, and he do a full wheel/bearing change mid session, sometimes a couple times.

Would they fly off and bounce down the road.

I had an old set of foundation wheel with hard cores, but the otter layer didnt over lap. Oneday one flew off and left me with one 35mm super hard black wheel.

Looks like they don’t for Kenny. But he does make the impossible seem possible.

Probably wouldn’t advise trying a powerslide

He only rode a short way, in a straight line.

If they actually work, they’re brilliant!

And I bet he looked good doing it too
