Emi Martinez, two yellow cards without getting sent off, saved two penalties, shushed an entire stadium, enemy of the French forever
Missed the game but how does this work?
Edit: just realised he must have got his second yellow during the shoot out.
Have finally calmed down after the Villa game. Let me start by saying were absolutely awful. Didnât deserve to get to extra time, let alone penalties. Martinez showed again why is the worlds number 1. So happy heâs a Villa player! Shithouse goat
We basically did what Real Madrid did last night. Only started playing towards the end when Lille got tired of dominating us utterly. Couldâve won it in extra time. Bossed the penalties. Lille are terrifying at home for such a young squad
Yep exactly. I imagine 90% of the stadium had no clue what was going on. They booâd him for the entire match then he goaded them after a save in the shootout and got another yellow for it.
He then did a little dance in front of them when he saved the last penalty and won the match. Gonna need an armed escort straight to the airport
Mate of mine copped a ÂŁ300 framed Martinez shirt after the final penalty save
Why Emiliano MartĂnez was not sent off for a second booking
Hide
Emiliano MartĂnez was booked during the first half of Aston Villaâs game at Lille and then shown a second yellow during the penalty shootout â but was correctly not sent off. To quote from the laws of football (emphasis added):
â10.3 Penalties (penalty shoot-out)
âPenalties (penalty shoot-out) are taken after the match has ended and unless otherwise stated, the relevant Laws of the Game apply. A player who has been sent off during the match is not permitted to take part; warnings and cautions issued to players and team officials during the match are not carried forward into penalties (penalty shoot-out).â
Having been booked in the shootout, MartĂnez then had to be careful. The law concludes with this section:
âSubstitutions and sendings-off during penalties (penalty shoot-out)
- A player, substitute, substituted player or team official may be cautioned or sent off
- A goalkeeper who is sent off must be replaced by an eligible player
- A player other than the goalkeeper who is unable to continue may not be replaced
- The referee must not abandon the match if a team is reduced to fewer than seven players.â
Ref was a fucking clown all game tbf. Giving out yellows like it was going out of fashion!
back to normal football news, iâm really torn on the FA cup replays decision. if youâre a premier league team with any kind of european matches you will be playing waaaay too many matches in the season. league cup, fa cup, premier league, european - unless you have a ridiculously large squad of quality players (because, say, you flouted FFP for years before it started being properly policed) itâs impossible. it just leads to more injuries from players being over played etc etc
i think the only real way forward would be to reduce the size of the premier league to say 18 teams and just relegate everton forever finally
The games gone
The Premier League winter break has been scrapped with the new season set to start later in August, giving players more rest in the summer months. Doesnât help when itâs a World Cup or Euro year though does it?
and just relegate everton forever
Oh come on
aw it was tongue in cheek buddy youâre nowhere near as bad as all that
Thing is. We are
I donât even like watching us anymore. I could handle going down as long as Leeds donât go up at the same time.
Want Ipswich to come up

This is footballing.

Whose fault is that though? All those extra matches havenât just appeared out of nowhere.
I thought there was a certain magic to replays and they mustâve helped clubs lower down no end but Iâve definitely watched a few which have pretty much been a waste of time.
Well itâs certainly not the lower league clubs! Itâs UEFA expanding European competitions that adds games to the calendar.
The smaller clubs should not suffer as a result. If the bigger/richer clubs want to scrap replays they should have to pay some soft of compensation lower down the pyramid.
I like Burnhamâs idea of adding it to the Football Governance Bill that is going through the Commons on Tuesday.

As ever with modern football, it all boils down to TV money.
Really wanted that to be Neil Warnock or Mick McCarthy but Steven Taylor will do
