Just been at Selfridges bowl, where half a dozen 9-year-olds showed up and started dropping in off the plexiglass vert extension
Rough one last night. A combination of my Dennis shoes being knackered (grip and flick gone) and right knee hurting wasn’t the best. Time for a few days off.
Rough one today for me. First time out since I hurt my foot a few weeks ago and felt like I was wearing someone else’s legs. Took an hour to get loose and by then I was over it so came home.
The last time I skated I’d been out twice a week for the month prior and was feeling really comfortable, and now I’ve just lost all that compounding effect.
Back out tonight. Finally got a couple of back 5050’s on the park ledge. Yeah only a 5050 but for some reason they’ve been a bastard, drifting and flopping off the park ledge.
I also have a newfound respect for anyone that can do front crooked grinds. We tried a number tonight and wow, the knocks you take when you don’t lock in or commit properly are fairly rough. Really difficult trick imho.
Get back out there is my shitty advice, it’ll sort itself quick. I left feeling awful on Monday and despite not being 100% tonight, had a good skate and left feeling happy.
Hate that feeling, if you stop skating even for a few weeks and you get back on it, your brain knows exactly what you need to do. You can “feel” exactly how a trick is supposed to feel. But your body doesn’t get it.
Must be some neurological reason behind it. I guess it’s muscle memory fading, seems really pronounced in skating though.
Picking up a golf club after a long break, yeah you’ll be rusty, but at least it feels like you’re using your own arms.
And that’s exactly why skateboarding is so cool and can be so rewarding: it’s really hard.
There’s also that inexplicable thing (at least for me) where if I don’t skate for a week or two the first session or first bit of a session will be amazing and I’ll land stuff I didn’t think I would and then immediately the next time I go out I can’t even pop straight. Never figured that out.
The one we’re all chasing though: When everything feels perfect. You just feel super comfortable, clothes, board, zen. Happens about once a year for me if that.
Like @franc said, it’s hard.
Yeah some days everything clicks and you land everything and that always feel really good. Being hyped on your setup definitely helps.
It might have to do with age but I don’t skate at my best if I skate too much, like 4 days in a row, I feel more comfortable if I skate 2 or 3 times a week with rest days between skate days.
Went for a quick skate last night, it was about to rain but I thought I’d try anyway, got about 15 minutes before it started drizzling and from there I just kept doing 5050s on a metal grind box until it the ground and the box were too wet for my midlife safety. So stoked I went despite the weather, felt like I stole a session from Mother Nature if that makes any sense, haha.
I never wrote this in the skate dreams thread but all my best skate dreams are like that. Not doing mad shit that’s unrealistic, but a true representation of the perfect session where everything is on lock. Sometimes I bail but then I realise why and I do better next time. Love those dreams.
IRL I once had this session where I leaned heelflips (only day I’ve ever done heelflips) and I realised the dynamics of how to 270 out of noseslides and tailslides. I just got it, for one session.
That was fucking ages ago though, now all I have is “somebody else’s legs syndrome”
I have 2 types of dreams and they are always in Barcelona, even if it’s visually somewhere completely different. It never looks like Barca, usually more like a EA skate game.
- I can’t skate properly because I have a paper board or i’m trying skate a shoe or I have no wheels or my board just keeps disappearing.
- I can skate and things just flow and I do the most graceful tricks first go and every go. Nothing crazy, tricks that I have been able to do in the past but just done so well that I can feel the feeling through the dream and i’m so stoked that i’m having such a good skate.
And…
- Im naked and cant find any clothes
Mine are either stupid ones where laws of physics are fucked (there is zero gravity and my board keeps flying into space or my board only goes 2mph no matter how hard I push)
Or
It’s a mid 90’s thing where it’s a teenage me wearing my freshest Polo, KCKs, Timberland jeans on a crisp new 7.75” and I’m just pushing through generic Cali schoolyards doing Tom Asta type flat ground flip tricks with east coast hip hop playing everywhere but without any speakers or headphones
Yeah same, I just got really annoyed for some reason - was thinking why am I even doing this, the amount of effort it’s been taking to get back to feeling comfortable only for it to disappear in three weeks, how much will I have to do to get to a point where I’m learning ‘new’ tricks again. Is that even possible for me now.
But then last month I was really stoked on skating, so I know I’ve just got to get out again at the weekend and I’ll feel better.
Realistically, I only started skating again regularly in March of this year, having not skated at all 2020-2023. So really, at 37, why am I expecting things to come back in only a few months!

Skateboarding doesn’t owe you shit, what you get back from it is a direct response to how much effort you put into it and yeah, you’re obviously not going to film switch backtails if you haven’t really skated in 5 years, unless you are Brian Wenning but even Brian Wenning isn’t really Brian Wenning anymore.
Try to go for quick skates as often as you can, even if it’s just for 20 minutes, it’s the best way to feel connected to your board again. No pressure, zero expectations, just roll around and do flatground manuals, ollie up curbs, do powerslides. Have fun.
Couple of hours tonight. My legs felt absolutely awful to begin with but warmed up. Another brutal one due to the humidity and a handful of falls. Nothing happening trick wise and I’m finding front tail slides the most frustrating trick ever, just can’t do them at all and have been struggling for ages.
Sunday morning skate at a local park, new board and newish shoes, good fun cruising around with a 48-year-old New Zealander and another dude I had never met before. It’s now 1:31, I’m gonna cook lunch in a minute and then chill for the rest of the day. Yes.
Met up with my mate today and went up to the loading bay in Glasgow. First time I’ve properly skated in 18 months. Had loads of fun, today and Voltorol 4 have reignited my spark for skateboarding. I think while the kids are off school I’m gonna attempt to get up early and skate before everyone’s up
Nice @h_palmer627
Been at the local for less than an hour and snapped my board
Luckily my old board is here so just set that up.
