It’s not about running out of space but about sustaining the level of living we have now with too many people. We should be trying to reduce that there are lots of developing countries who are going to want the sort of lifestyle that we’ve grown accustomed to and honestly after how much the west has raped the planet we really have no right telling other countries that they shouldn’t be industrialising as it’s bad for the planet.
And there is an ethical way to reduce population which is bring up living standards across the world so less people are pumping out kids worrying that a bunch of them might die as babies. Just because there’s 7 billion people here now doesn’t mean we have to keep adding to that forever, there’s nothing wrong with the number of people having children going down over generations.
this is what Bill Gates wants to do. improve infant mortality rates and life expectancies by providing FREE vaccines to the developing world. now people think he is the antichrist who wants to kill everyone
on the side, how dare you guys be rude about Attenborough, he’s a fucking living legend. shame on you and your houses!
Agreed STFU about Attenborough. He’s done more than anyone else I could name to show people the beauty of what we’ve lost and stand to lose even more of. I’m pretty sure that many of the environmentalists leading the charge could trace a lot of their motivation back to seeing his documentaries as kids.
the bit that pisses me off about all of this is how anti-science people have become. Attenborough has literally been everywhere and seen everything, but we won’t listen to him on population/climate stuff? fuck that. let’s listen to Dorreen on facebook, she holidays at butlins and has seen some shit
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Attenborough deciding that that’s for someone else to do, though. But despite that every recent one that I’ve seen has a gut punch at the end where he talks about habitiat loss or the increasingly rapid extinction of species.
As even Monbiot concedes “His revelation of the wonders of nature has been a great public service.” If every series was just a run down of all the ways that everything is completely fucked then absolutely no cunt would watch them and they wouldn’t even get made.
Great - environmentalists, both fighting for the same thing, getting caught up in petty bickering and finger pointing which does nothing but help those who push shareholder profit over making the planet a better place for everybody to live.
I really dislike the idea that everyone has to fight the entire war rather than picking battles. Nobody can ever address everything perfectly. Saw lots of similar criticism leveled at Greta too. Both are amazing, but different people with different knowledge and experiences, well placed to address specific goals in specific ways. I think whataboutism is equally (or even more) dangerous in infighting than when levelled across the field.
I also think a little personal responsibility would go amiss. We all live on the same planet and are equally responsible for it. That doesn’t mean kowtowing to corporate greed.
Lol you get so heated in every debate that comes up on here. Chill were all friends here.
Everyone knows it’s big corpos doing 90 percent of the damage. Doesn’t mean individuals shouldn’t strive to do their best too IMO. Corpos are made of individuals too. Takes some re-engineering (or more likely a chrisis) to change that realistically. Longer term thinking but I like to think people can make changes at grassroots levels that affect the big picture - not necessarily in the volume of recycled materials but at least in shaping policy and thinking. Happens slow though, that’s why I think we should all feel personally responsible and nurture that responsibility for future generations too.
I hear both sides. Yeah, Attenborough is a national treasure but he is institutionalised as much as anyone in a position of wealth and acclaim meaning that he has not got all the angles to the argument, he’s naively looking at a narrow view.
He does not realise that normal people living day to day are just existing exactly to order, it’s not us that is steering the global downturn, we are just following the guidance of government, industry and media.
It’s these things that need to change first, and we will naturally fall in line.
Nah i like the rose tints I’m this case. World’s fucked, planet is melting and technology is gonna kill us and everything is collapsing so I think it’s helpful to have a nice grandad to lean on. No human is perfect.
Not sure I can agree that people have been trying to be environmentally conscious for 30 years. Like how exactly? By consuming more and more every single year, flying more and so on? People absolutely need to start taking responsibility and so does business. Corporations and individuals pointing the finger at each other is just a two way cop out, though. People feed corporations by buying their stuff, there’s a tacit approval there, at some point we decide “yeah I know all that but I really want this new shiny”.
