Aww man I love seals. That sucks.
If it makes you feel any better, there’s a walrus in Wales

Eh?
Wow. That’s interesting.
Definitely need to get the MS Paint thread going again.
Publicity for the purchaser, mostly.
This stuff is insane to me.
Weirdcore - the guy who does the Aphex Twin live visuals - just sold a GIF for $120k.
Its here: //////////////////Aphex Twin\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ (@AphexTwin) | Foundation
…but anyone can use and has access to it. Someone just owns a token which says they own it but thats the extent of their rights, or something.
After seeing that, I looked a bit more into it - and “Beeple” (Who I’d never heard of) sold a JPG for $69m recently.
I mean…its fucking sick that artists are getting paid. If you really look into it, that $69m is for 15 years worth of work or more. It isn’t just some random who knocked up an image.
But still, these prices are insane to me.
Fuck it. Make artists rich.
Heard on a pod cast the other week that the NBA are going to be selling things like this as virtual trading cards. Basically a little gif of a shot or something with a digitalnumber stamp on it. mental to think people would be willing to pump money into this.
It is an odd one but then again it’s also just like a lot of other things that people pay a lot of money for that have no inherent value other than their rarity. See also people going mad over the energy used for crypto mining but don’t even comment about people tearing whole landscapes apart looking for gold and diamonds.
Somebody like Tiago or Shane O’Neill probably gonna start selling tricks.
This one’s crazy too, someone built a house on Mars in the Sims and sold it for 500k.
Isn’t this all drug money shenanigans?
I mean…I hope so.
Does anyone want to buy my first post on this forum? Call it 50p and its yours. DM me xx
Was it anything good? Do we have to buy it to find out, like a Kinder Surprise?
Not splashing out on a “Hahaha” or “I agree” or something. Not that you’re that type, but y’know.
Dunno. When you buy it I’ll dig it out. Dogcoin only.
The digital rights and ownership issue is solved thanks to blockchain. It’s likely to be one of the single biggest markets on the planet in the future. It was always very hard to prove ownership of online content, and even easier to copy it and pass it off as original, but not any more.
If someone could deepfake my face onto Tiago for a whole section of waist high ssbsts type stuff I’d chuck a tenner at that.
I’ve been a fan of his for years. He’s a 3D artist who has been doing seriously complicated abstract designs and renders every single day for over 12-15 years, often making his old content free for folks like myself to download and use for any commercial or personal projects, no questions asked. He gradually, then quickly made a name for himself and many in my industry have been following his lead with the everyday designs, but yeah, even he doesn’t get the whole NFT/crypto hype. His first batch of images for sale went under the radar for a few dollars and then a few weeks ago, in what I think was more of an experiment with the viability of NFTs, he had an auction on some NFT site where he sold a bunch of images for about $50-70k each and came out with $3million in the bank. That was then followed up by the Everydays image for $70 million. And another cool thing about it is that Beeple, or any creator in the first place, is guaranteed a commission on future sales through the blockchain.
The main thing I see with NFTs is that the sort of people who will tip a YT content creator the price of a coffee for their videos would be the sort of people who will buy NFTs. They’re literally just digital assets that don’t serve any real purpose than the purchaser likes them, whether it’s a new outfit for their computer game avatar, or a Minecraft building or a Beeple image. Best way to think of it is like the Mona Lisa - anybody can go to the Louvre and shoot an photo of it, or even buy a copy, but only one person would own the original. Or when the iTunes music sales app came out - “why would you buy a digital version of the song, and not have the CD?!!?”
Or remember a few years ago, WuTang released Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, literally a one-off, and that slimey prick Martin Shkreli bought it for $2million? Similar deal.
There’s definitely going to be a torrent of NFT sales hype in the coming months with many trying to jump on the Beeple bandwagon. It doesn’t mean the standard will go up, more that electricity and hardware demand for bitcoin mining will skyrocket. I’ll probably give it a blast myself at some point, but without a large, dedicated following in the first place, like many others, it won’t be a major money maker. Definitely an interesting tech and social development for sure though.
To be fair I’ve spent money on Pokemon Go
