I’d love them to do a show of hands of all the MPs and find out if any of them live in a rented house. I’d put good money on it being slim to none, regardless of party. I’d also put money on a good chunk never having rented or earned minimum wage.
Dominic Raab doing the exact same stuff with his hands when he speaks as Tony Blair did. Probably used the same coach.
Except as a student or on their gap year.
Not sure the chaps at Eton were doing Just Eat at the weekends.
Nah, but I can easily imagine one working at a bar in Brisbane or somewhere in Thailand for a few weeks while they “discovered themselves” on daddy’s coin.
Just to bump this topic back up, my parents and I are sort of dealing with the benefits/social care system at the minute and it’s a right old pain up the arse. My aunt had a traumatic brain injury in childhood and her whole life she’s been cared for by my nan. Nan didn’t want help/feared her being institutionalised at the time so refused to have her registered as disabled, put her through normal school etc etc then supported her both care-wise and financially. Never put any plans in place because as far as she was concerned she’d never have to worry about it because in her head, she’d have plenty of time to sort things out after my grandad died and that’d be that. So she dies suddenly of an aneurysm in the early peak of a pandemic leaving my dementia-suffering grandad (whose issues she’d also hidden from the doctors due to pride/fear) and my aunt living together. Eventually got my grandad into care because he was unsafe without her and was jeopardising both of them, only for him to die a few weeks later as well. What’s followed has been a year of my dad, who has power of attorney, bouncing from doctors, to adult social care and everywhere else and getting nowhere because she’s not receiving PIP. Applied for PIP twice now and because of Covid regulations she’s only had telephone interviews which appear to be a series of yes/no answers which she would have no idea of how to engage with or understand the wider implications, and that’s that. The money isn’t actually what she needs, it’s the access to the help and care side of things, but that’s nigh on impossible to obtain without PIP. She’s now living in a flat on her own, not looking after herself properly or managing her medication despite my parents setting it up with labelled cases for each day/time, calling 999 several times a week for asinine issues (arthritis for example) because she doesn’t understand why this is wrong despite both us and the paramedics telling her this is wrong, and basically being a nuisance to her neighbours because she’s lonely and craving attention, basically because she’s gone from having my nan’s full and undivided attention at all times to actually having a bit of independence and the novelty of it has worn off. My parents both work mostly full time and are moving both heaven and earth to do as much for her as they can through the week, but the constant phone calls from her and reports from the management staff at this flat of things she’s done are getting too much for them to deal with.
Sorry for the huge essay but this has been the last 14 months or so for my family and my parents, my sister and I have been working tirelessly to make sure she has the best quality of life and getting fuck all. I spent nearly an hour on the phone with Citizen’s Advice this morning and still nothing as yet, because her local office has a 5 working day turnaround to get back to people to start opening cases. There must be so many people falling through the cracks and dying silently of starvation or failing to take their medication properly and stuff like that because of a lack of care for society’s vulnerable. It makes me sick.
Wow. That’s really gnarly. I hope you get to the point you need to…but also, you are probably spot on by mentioning all the people falling thought the cracks.
At least your aunt has your family around her. Sounds weird, but she is one of the lucky ones, in that sense.
I hope it all begins to work out for you all.
He’s got the mrs out and about preaching bullshit, as he knows he’d go down like a lead balloon after the gay slurs he’s used in the past, like in The Spectator for one…
They’re all fucking liars out for themselves.
They say whatever they need to fit their agenda.
That’s a horrendous situation. I’m so sorry man. That’s all I can say.
Your story has made me realise my family will face something strangely similar actually.
All the best mate.
Which is why they win elections.
They’ve gone so seamlessly from ‘the shortages are nothing to do with Brexit’ to ‘it’s what we wanted actually’ that it’s breathtaking. Literally what…days apart. Not even weeks.
They can change the message at will. They have most of the press behind them and the BBC are like a shitting leaf about calling out the bollocks.
Labour don’t even have a message.
That’s literally the strategy, it’s out of the Russian playbook, and it’s exactly what republicans have been doing for years. Exhaust people with conflicting messaging at all times, eventually they just stop reasoning with it and just take things as gospel. The mental gymnastics is done for them.
As I left the house to walk to the bank earlier, I was thinking pretty deeply and ended up blurting out the words “why do I even follow the news?”
Thankfully, I was alone on the street so didn’t come across as too loose…but equally, they have won. Total news fatigue.
The cons must be laughing so hard that there’s no competition.
It’s the ultimate freeroll, they can do what they want.
Yeah I’m like that. I want to hear the sick burns on LBC etc, and was curious to hear the interviews Les was talking about on 5 live, then I remembered there’s a reason why I never watch news TV or listen to the radio any more.
That’s the problem really - the people that follow the news get frustrated because everything is shit and have no power the change anything, and the people that don’t follow the news are unaware that anything even needs to be changed.
Depressing really
I just tried looking up news sites which only report positive stories.
They are pretty wack and reek of religion being behind it.
Anyone know of a good one? Or more so, a good radio station which only reads positive news?
Especially one with positive traffic news. That would be nice. I’d like to know where the M25 is flowing freely during rush hour.
Like Boris at the last election, going on about how the NHS is broken, how poverty has gotten worse, ect and only the tories can fix it, if you vote them into power! Acting like Labour have been in power for 15 years and fucked everything and it was now time for Boris and Co to sweep in and save the day and people bought into it!?!
Having just finished Surge, I thought this was going elsewhere.
We’re fucked. I’m gunna have to work from home two days a week soon. Petrol is fucking insane and my bills are about to go up around then.
