Yeah, horrendous. If something has gone wrong and they went down instead of up then I think there’s basically no chance of rescue. Would almost be better if there had been some catastrophic failure and they all drowned.

So grim. I hope it isn’t a case of the game controller they are using to control the sub running out of battery or something.

At least 80 people died on Monday when their ship sank in the Mediterranean. Half a dozen billionaires paying stupid money to gawp at one of the worst tragedies in modern history, a shipwreck that’s basically a mass grave, won’t be missed. It’s depressing how much coverage it’s getting.

I read that they have weights which they just drop to come back up. I’d assume that would be purely mechanical but it could have jammed somehow I suppose.

unfortunately “migrant ship sinking” isn’t news to a large proportion of our country (many of them would be stoked). whereas “rich people’s submarine ride gone wrong” is a story they can spin for weeks

Dunno, are the two things comparable? The main guy on board might be rich but they’re all still possible going to die in a horrible way, same as any accident.

I think they’re entirely comparable, they’re both stories about people losing their lives at sea. Just that when it’s seven rich guys it’s a big news story, and when it’s 700 poor men, women and children, it’s just another day in the news.

Anyone dying is sad, rich or poor, the media and coverage is very comparable.

The stories are comparable, because you can compare the enormous amount of coverage the billionaires are getting, and the vast efforts to rescue them, with the tiny amount the migrant boat got, and the minimal effort to recover survivors.

It’s just the way news works, it’s unusual, there’s the Titanic link which is something that has long fascinated people but mostly they’re not just dead, there’s an element of mystery as to their current whereabouts and the chance of a thrilling rescue. Unconvinced that anyone gives a shit because they’re rich, if the same six people had all just been on a yacht and it sank in the middle of some sea somewhere I don’t think it would be news at all.

The coverage is constantly telling us who they are and how successful they are. That’s 100% the angle.

Yeah, there’s the schadenfreude angle as well certainly.

Yes I agree, and the attitude to the migrant crisis (don’t like this term but it’s in the vernacular) in this country and our media is shocking and unfair, and our government do absolutely nothing to help - quite the opposite clearly.

I’ve just seen quite a few reactions of ‘oh fuck them they’re just rich assholes, who cares’ when really, everyone’s got family and friends and they are just privileged enough that their company will pay for search and rescue.

Hope this doesn’t make me sound like one of those ‘in defence of billionaires guys’

As much as Sean Goff is somewhat insufferable, it’s pretty funny when she gets to the bit about bringing in proper coaches and he can reel off being an ex british champion and competing with Tony Hawk.
