The oddest thing I read was today that Peter Mandelson reckons Starmer should use Nigel Farage as a go-between with Musk and Trump.

The notoriously left leaning, Labour loving Nigel Farage? Asking him for anything would only play into his hands to use against Starmer as a weak leader and further his own political ambitions. Smart move.

Mandelson has always been gaff prone.

It does have a member of Boyzone, self-styled wannabe hardman Shane Lynch.

“Maurizio Cattelan’s provocative artwork of a banana duct-taped to a wall has fetched $6.2m (£4.9m) at Sotheby’s in New York - four times higher than pre-sale estimates.**

The auction house says Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun outbid six other rivals to get the “Comedian” installation of the Italian visual artist on Wednesday.

“In the coming days, I will personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience,” Mr Sun was quoted as saying.

The taped banana - now perhaps one of the most expensive fruits ever sold - was actually bought earlier in the day for a mere $0.35, according to the New York Times.

“Comedian” was first unveiled to the public in 2019, instantly becoming a viral sensation and also provoking heated debates about what art is.

The installation - which has travelled around the world - comes with instructions on how to replace the banana whenever it rots.

In fact, the fruit has been eaten not once, but twice.“

Does it have to be the same bit of tape?

I assume it’s like Triggers Broom.
And here’s me, getting up each morning to go to work like an idiot.

There’s the problem. Or one of them.
It’s not an artwork of a banana duct-taped to a wall. It’s a banana duct-taped to a wall.

That age old thing of just because you can doesn’t mean you should. If every idea was realised we’d be swimming in even more shit than we are now. People need more restraint and idea quality control.

Art is what you can get away with.

Zero skill or talent involved there with the banana taped to a wall, but fools and their money are easily parted. The buyer, who made a fortune with crypto, definitely has a few NFTs of some cartoon ape gathering digital dust somewhere.

Must be some kind of money laundering surely

Totally disagree, Art should be totally cut from the greed/chancer side of the ego.

I agree it’s become a kind of pushing the boundaries over past couple of centuries (I know it’s always been there) which is cool if aesthetics come into play. Some “art” thinks it pushes boundaries but they’re just yawn ideas that should have stayed as a joke to be forgotten about.

Art is also about great self promotion. Is Damien Hirst a great artist or a greater promoter of his work? Which is no easy feat in its self.

Depends if the artists ego and need to get personal kudos is more important than just creating for creating sake, because it’s in you?

He gets all his work made by painters and decorators on £200 a day, he used to get art students to do it but they were too creative.

It’s really well duct taped I like how close to the banana they have got it. Do you think they tape the banana first and then apply to the wall or hold the banana against the wall and press the tape down with their fingers? I might try and make one of my own.

And none of his work is aestheically pleasing, leaves me feeling less than zero of any emotion.
Some of his spinny circly things looked ok but like the fashion with acrylic pouring, it’s the medium that creates the art in the happy accident way, not much to do with the artist other than the idea. Which is cool if the result is good.

It is strangely visually pleasing. The way it’s taped is perfect. Balanced with just the right amount of tape to the size of the banana. The angle of the tape with banana placement too.

It’s no happy accident.
