Use digital ID over here in Estonia. It’s amazing. You can log into nearly any site with it, do bank transactions and digitally sign documents (no scanned pdfs with your signature being faxed off).
It’s brilliant, it makes things so efficient. You just have your email, phone and address in 1 place and you never have to update it anywhere else. It’s as good as a passport and you can sign nearly anything online. You can vote digitally and a lot of stores use it as your loyalty/membership card.
Even if you forget your card (you’re supposed to carry it around by law), you can login via government website (there’s 2FA, you put your pin into an app on your phone) which I’ve done once or twice, and as your family is automatically linked you don’t have to prove your wife/kids are who they say they are (this is only available to the appropriate people though). You have to pick up prescriptions with your card, or for your family, as they’re linked, you can pick up one for your wife/kids with no hassle.
In short, brilliant, massively efficient and timesaving and I honest to god wouldn’t know how to live day to day if I had to grind through the endless different types of authentication when ringing up a bank. You can authenticate over the phone if you put in your ID number.

I’m against digital ID because it’s another step towards authoritarianism, which I hope never to see becoming the reality of day to day life in the UK. China is authoritarian, and Chinese Joe Bloggs absolutely loves it, because life is very convenient and the government looks after him. If you’re not Joe Bloggs, you might have some issues.

The potential for abuse is massive, and it’s likely to be in more subtle ways than you might expect. This government has absolutely NOT reassured me that they have respect for civil liberties. Arresting old people for supporting Palestine, the Public Order Act, the Online Safety Act…it’s all completely out of order in my opinion…and bringing this in on a wave of illegal immigrant propaganda is just gross frankly.

We already have a lot of convenient government systems in the UK, I was very surprised by the levels of form filling still in place in Japan when I visited a few months back. Makes you realise how far it’s already progressed.
I don’t want to give the bastards any more levers to pull than they already have haha.

yep. I’ve lived in several EU countries and can’t fathom how we’ve managed in the UK for so long without ID. in some ways I admire it. it definitely leans into our hate for authority but then we do fuck all when that authority actually does anything.
they’ll surely tie it to your NI number. in Spain everything you do is based on that and it makes distribution of benefits and healthcare more efficient

Look into WeChat. China runs digital ID through it. Russia has copied it. Now we’re getting it. Control of data and flow of information and the quiet observation and removal of dissenting voices.
If the UK goes down this path we’re on a proper 1984 heckride. The worst thing is most of us won’t even notice. Life may even appear better. Definitely read 1984 again. Consider the outlier. Pretend you’re a rebel.

I think the trouble with anything like this is… The people running this country are fucking fools and have been for a very long time. How can we ever trust anyone to do it right, safely and with the right reasons? We can’t! there is always a nefarious ulterior motive to anything and no matter how convenient these things are for basic peoples lives, it does not feel right because we know somewhere, somehow there are shady dark areas and the wrong people benefitting from it all. Conspiracy? no, just the reality of the ever growing divide.

That lives on your smartphone, updating and changing in the background. So it will be law to own a smartphone too? As digital ID will be mandatory.
Maybe you’ll just be allowed to get a chip? Let’s all just do the right thing and tell them to fuck off.

They had so many chances to be trusted and every time its a mistake.
The way they are making it about illegal immigration makes it double suss. If they said this is to knock fraud on the head I’d be more inclined to believe it
