God I bet that stinks
I appreciate Aphex Twin and Husker Du on the same battle jacket
Itâs not that deep. People were starting to ask âWhy?â. Whatâs the best response? Justify yourself and fight against the tide or gracefully accept that times have changed?
I had a negative response to posting a Jovontae âNapping negroâ deck on my instagram last year. A young black skater I know reasonably well told me he found it offensive. I initially started to defend the graphic explaining that Jovontae chose it, it was actually anti-racist, blah blah. He disagreed with me and I had to stop and think.
Of course if something appears racist, and somebody comes across it and is offended, itâs racist. You canât go around justifying the context of everything and expecting people to understand. Times change and some things need to be consigned to the history books.
You can be antiracist for all we know and you can be racist and like cool music, who knows⌠But youâre far too angry about it for it to seem genuine and innocent.
What are you actually so angry about? it canât genuinely be that independent stopped using a certain logo can it? Be honest.
Out of all the things in this world to take offense to, the Independent cross logo that was changed a few years back doesnât seem too high on the list
Donât you reckon there were probably people making the exact same arguments about those other examples you mentioned of the team name and the cheese, that they represented things they liked and thought nothing more about it? I donât know just seems like a weird hill to choose to die on.
I think itâs funny that someone can do such punk things as embroidery and blogging and then go outside in a jacket that theyâve deliberately sewn a bunch of corporate logos on.
Wasnât skateboarding placed under a massive microscope when Jason Jesseâs past Nazi ways were outted? I feel like this was the time that skateboarding decided to clean up any misinterpretations that might happen. Independent being one.
I bet a lot of people liked the logo for the wrong reasons. Enjoyed being able to wear it in public with no come back. If I owned Independent, I wouldnât want to spend every day for the next forever having to issue statement after statement about not being Naziâs just to keep a logo. It makes total sense to ditch it. Just for their own sanity in the modern world. Image what every social media post comment section would look like every-time they posted anything with it. They did the right thing.
OP cable tying independent cross and spitfire flags to telephone poles like a fucking loser
Oh ffs

Brands change their identity and branding. It happens all the time. I know it must be frustrating if youve spent hours sewing the old one onto your vest but youâll get over it
Just sew on a real iron cross and stop shilling for NHS Incorporated. You have all the skills, youâll be a Nazi punk but youâll have your integrity and you can continue raging about culture wars when you get spat on by the upper middle class. At least youâll be all snug in your nice coat.
Yes, I completely agree with you on that. What I was saying earlier is that whatever their reasons for the change, Independent didnât handle it well and didnât carry a lot of their existing customers with them. It was like, âweâre now embarrassed about our logo so weâre going to drop it and never mention it again.â As a result they got a lot of abusive messages on social media from people who used to be their most loyal fans. Thatâs never a good thing for any brand.
I probably would have gone for a more evolutionary approach.
At one point they produced a whole load of alternative logos. There was one in a diamond, one in a lozenge and there was (and is) one that was like the old cross but with the top and bottom removed. That would have been my starting-point. It looks more like they were simplifying the original logo and less like they were suddenly embarrassed by it (and, by implication, embarrassed about all the loyal customers whoâd had the cross tattoos).
Looking at their website, it does seem that theyâre settling on this version now.
Letâs be honest the Indy logo has always been shit
Pahaha can you order me some wipes to clean my MacBook hahahahahha
But why are loyal fans important at all if they are into it because a logo gives off a âvibeâ? Any fan for the right reasons wouldnât care about a logo style and accept the reasoning.
Unless the core ethos of the company and bosses are questionable then they should either stand up for the logo and be judged for that or if they are decent and doing the right thing then they should be getting rid of any confusion and connotations.
Does Pepsi consult their fans when they change their logo over and over?
Mostly they employ consultants and researchers to look at how a logo will impact on existing and potential customers. Itâs a weird thing but a badge or logo somehow becomes an emotional anchor for people, even as the product range changes. It makes a difference and big companies spend millions getting it right. Most logo changes are evolutionary - if you look at Apple there was one massive change, and then all of the rest were tweaks.
Very few brands ditch a logo altogether. Mostly itâs about balancing familiarity with modernity
None of those use Nazi symbols though
