Linking back to my long workout post for bad backs a while back, these three exercises or variants are essential.
Did your daughter get you with the classic dad joke of “I think they’re going to have to chop it off”
Unfortunately not, thought I’d drilled that old wheezer into her by now
Ankle still hurts but gone for two runs and a bike this week and it’s not feeling any worse at least.
I’m after getting an ankle support so I can at least have a roll around and hopefully get involved with footy again
Never bought one before so not sure what’s going to be better?
Laced one like this - https://www.upmedical.co.uk/products/football-ankle-support?variant=40650862559393
Or one like this - Active Ankle Protection Brace – ANKLEGUARD
I know I’m going to end up relying on it but well and truly had enough of sitting around now. Very open to suggestions also please!
I would avoid an elastic only brace as they just stretch out and become weaker and weaker over time.
I have had a McDavid lace up ankle support for nigh on 20 years now and it’s still going strong. Check sizing out though - iirc a small one fit me fine but check reviews on amazon for guidance etc
It’s like this - not the cheapest but 100% recommend:
I think Selley used to run them on both ankles!
Haha fairly sure he still does on the rare occasion I see him out!
Nice one, I’d rather spend a bit more and have something decent so will give that a go
I tried different braces a few years back after ankle surgery. I found the lace up ones a bit fiddly to put on. I ended up using the one Andy Murray uses - has plastic splints to stabilise the joint, fits snugly but not restrictively and goes on with a single Velcro strap. I figured if it’s good enough for pro-level tennis it’s ok for skating. Aircast A60.
Got this muscle strain in my neck, really annoying, means I can’t turn my head without turning entire body and is difficult doing anything, sleeping, etc. It’s pretty much healed again, but I know I’m one stretch away from being at square one so I’ve been trying to find someone to get help from.
In the end I get recommended this dude by my brother in law, like a chiropractor.
I go in there, it’s a sports clinic so it’s legit, and he’s a big guy, a bit overweight, he sits me down and asks me what’s wrong and I explain.
First thing I notice is he hasn’t got a computer or a laptop anywhere in sight, he writes down all his notes by hand. And when he’s explaining stuff to me he’s pointing to these pictures in this old, thick, muscle/skeleton hardback book with black and white pictures, and all the photos are worn out where he’s been pointing at them, they’re all rubbed out and faint.
All these things I didn’t see as bad though.
Anyway, I lie down on the special bed and he’s trying to crack my back with my leg one way and my arm the other and my spine like a fucking corkscrew and he’s got one arm under me and he’s leaning with all his weight on me saying ‘exhale exhale’ and he’s like ‘No cracking…that’s good!’ and it feels like he’s got fingers made out of lead and he’s grinding these knots out of my back for an hour.
At the end am covered in weird bruises (‘scarring on the muscles under the skin, we’ve broken them up now’) and the guy was great, you could tell he knew his shit. Was excruciating and amazing all at the same time.
He sounds great. Reminded me of when I went to this sports physio when I was having one of my many achilles flair ups. He said he thought it was more of a calf issue as it was really tight and he tried to unknot it using this metal contraption with a kind of nub on the edge that was supposed to get between the fibres. Literally the most pain I have ever felt, writhing around on the table with sweat dripping off my nose. It felt like he was putting all his weight on me but then demonstrated he was barely touching me, just holding the thing between his thumb and forefinger. Mad. He said he’s had a few women in there that said it was worse than child birth I was actually quite traumatised afterwards and have never been back despite having plenty of injuries that warranted it.
I used to get that somewhat regularly about 10 years ago. In the time since, I started with a personal trainer doing loads of bodyweight / calisthenics / HIIT stuff and kickboxing, which I’ve continued with since leaving the UK. i’ve had no further neck and shoulder muscle strains and the only thing I can think of would be the proper exercise strengthening the affected area. Your experience may vary, but it might be worth joining a local gym and doing some classes for the next 3 months and see how you get on.
Do you do specific neck training? I don’t kickbox but used to have the same problem and that helped me. I do about 10 mins on rest days. I’ll have Tyson neck in no time.
I don’t but maybe I should look into it
Not directly.
Pull-ups (hands facing out) with good form, so basically chest to bar will work wonders as they work on your back, lats and arms.
Spanky, also check your work chair/seating arrangement - that can be a big influence on neck and shoulder pain.
Yeah if I don’t use a wrist rest on my mouse hand then I get a knot in my back. Worked that out pretty quick.
Not really an injury, but I went for an NHS health check a couple of months ago and it turns out I have high blood pressure.
So for the past few weeks I’ve been making changes to my diet and I’ve been looking up exercises to help - it seems that there are two exercises that have been shown to help reduce blood pressure - planks and wall squats.
Now here’s the weird part. After doing planks a few times a day (literally 5 minutes work - 3 planks with a minute or so gap between) I find I’m getting better at skating. I’m getting back some of my old tricks I’'ve been scared of for ages. I wasn’t expecting that, or hoping for it, so I don’t think it’s the placebo effect.
The plank helps your blood pressure by squeezing your blood vessels and then releasing them, but it also strengthens your core muscles, and this is supposed to improve balance and prevent lower back pain. And my blood pressure is going down.
Who knew?
Good to know man!
I have just had some tests and blood pressure, all ECG and bloods all fine but my lipids are high so could be a sign of the typical skinny on the outside and fat on the inside. Hopefully I won’t be one of the heart attack shockers where everyone says but he was so slim and active etc. It might even be hireditary, My mum has had 2 stents and she is skinny too but we all put it down to smoking for so long.
So I basically need to change my diet, even though it’s fine, I just really like sweet things. More fibre etc.
I really want to skate more but being so shit annoys me so I don’t do it enough. Hopefully I can break through the barrier of feeling shit by starting with stuff like you. Do you have a little plan you do that I could adopt?
Same here. Chocolate is my downfall
Got a rancid fungal nail infection that I cannot shift with regular pharmacy treatments. Anyone had one and successfully gotten rid of it? My nail looks inhuman.
Toes eew.
My daughter had one not long ago. Tried soaking it in salt water and some cream, but it was the stuff from the doctors that sorted it. Try and get into the docs.
