Injuries and treatment

Go see a podiatrist.

Anybody on here got arthritis - specifically in their wrist but anywhere really - and got any advice on how they manage it? Docs confirmed for me yesterday that the pin holding my right wrist together has been broken for about 8 years. As it’s so mashed the only operation they could do would be a fusion op leading to massively reduced movement. Can’t sanction that at my age (35). Holding off on the steroid injections for now as bad pain is very infrequent.

I know there’s not a great deal to be done really. Just bought myself a wrist support but if anyone’s got any supplement advice or anything related that would be appreciated. Feeling a bit down on it today, trying to find some sort of small thing I can do to make me feel like I’ve got some control/management of it

+1 on this, I’ve had these crazy pains in my wrist and thumb joints over the past month. Haven’t been skating so the only thing I can put it down to is arthritis. Got to get doc to check but my mum has it so likely hereditary.

I’ve got some digestive issues that trigger arthritis whenever I have a flare up. I don’t think it’s technically the same as the arthritis you’re describing as mine is more of a temporary immune system response - but the symptoms are probably similar. Mine usually affects my joints - wrists and ankles mostly and sometimes knees. Can be unpleasant.

I generally try to reduce inflammation as much as possible - I’m a bit fan of turmeric, both supplements and in cooking. Might be bullshit, though there are legit studies that show it reduces inflammation. An anti-inflammatory diet like the Mediterranean diet wouldn’t hurt either.

A friend of mine has very severe arthritis, to the point that if he couldn’t have injections he wouldn’t be able to walk. So they will definitely help if you have the option

Nice one fellas i can sympathize massively. Sounds like rheumatoid arthritis potentially for both of you? Mine is the other one, osteoarthritis. Obviously symptoms are the same just a different mechanism.

Good shout on the turmeric, I do use it a bit in cooking but think you can get teabags and pills so maybe I’ll try and get some of those included in my diet which is generally ok. But this is a good opportunity to try and improve it.

Obviously gonna keep skating because considering stopping is worse. Seen conflicting advice about wrist guards - some say they make no difference or can increase risk of a fracture further up the arm. Don’t fall over the best advice i guess. But if anyone rocks a wrist guard I’d be interested to hear about it

I got this, kneecaps just turning to sponge. Got it in ankles as well, I’m looking at fusion next. I’ve already had the big op to give me a bit more time.

mate of mine has rocked a wrist guard for about 20 years now and swears by it. he’s gnarly too. still doing handrails. his wrist basically never healed.

he tried to go without for a bit but of course immediately fell on it and was in agony.

maybe worth a try for you. at least give you some peace of mind.

@Mark Shit sounds like you’ve got issues everywhere! As i get older I’m really fearful of knee injuries. Maybe fearful not the right word. Just I know more and more skaters with them in my age group

Nice one Lazy. If you know what your mates brand of choice is I’d be stoked to know

Does your friend run a pizza restaurant?

Ahaha. Is this a Salman Agah reference? Totally forgot he rocked one

Yeah totally will ask him and get back to you. I know he has a few in rotation as they tend to get stinky like pads

If you do get turmeric capsules make sure you get the ones with black pepper in. Which sounds ridiculous haha, but the pepper increases the bodies absorption rates of curcumin which is the anti inflamatory compound.

Clipper do a nice turmeric and ginger tea. Their bags are also plastic free (I sound like a right hippie)

Done something to my foot, I slipped on a ledge the other day and think I over stretched it. If I straighten my leg out and then bend my foot up I get a shooting pain in my Achilles/bottom of my heel. Painful to walk on, though for some reason hurts less without shoes.

Really annoyed, last week I pulled a hamstring, two weeks ago I took a hard slam. Wouldn’t mind if I was getting it but I’m doing the most basic ass stuff.

Are anyone else’s knees screaming in this uk heatwave? The hotter it is, the more swollen and painful my knees seem to feel.

I seem to remember some of you suffered from plantar fasciaitis and saw this short that thought might help.

These simple exercises that can be done at home or even at work during your lunch break sorted me out when I suffered from it: https://www.chuv.ch/fileadmin/sites/otr/documents/otr-brochure-talalgie.pdf

Missed this at the time but yes, looking back it really did me in. The night before last was the worst. Really muggy and my legs felt like lead weights, knees not moving right for ages etc. The contrast with tonight, despite still being hot, it was far less muggy, was huge.

Yeah I was in tolerable but bordering into a doctors appointment levels of pain with my knees during the peak of the heat.
Probably connected but I’ve had pain the Achilles on my left foot recently and alongside the knee pain have had painfully tight calves on both legs, progressing into almost non stop tightness in the lower leg and up into the arse. Really painful, almost like a subtle muscle cramp but all day.
Stretched loads then spoke to a PT mate who said it’s probably sciatica and stretching might make it worse.
Laid down for a few days, entirely stopped drinking coffee for a week, then went skating twice this weekend, it’s all gone.
Not sure if it was a combination of no caffeine and skating it out or the dip in weather but the tightness is all but gone and the knees aren’t swollen at all.

It’s nothing to do with age, of course

Every time I stretch I seem to make my lower back worse!

I think I stretch after skating about 3 times a year and I never do it for more than 2 minutes. I never stretch before a skate, I just roll around doing basic shit for 5 minutes and take it from there.
