BA seems in a really good place.
I love the part where he talks about the boards he brought for the interview.
It would be rad to see Natas just hop onto a cruiser and carve down the street. Surely he still does that? Canāt we have a look? Maybe on a polarizer, Hewitt/Blender style. You just know heās still got that Natas steez. Surely he hasnāt just stopped altogether? He said something years ago about how nobody wanted to see an old man doing 80s tricks, well no we donāt but we would love to see you just swish about for a bit in Santa Monica with palm trees and sunshine. Maybe wearing Ellesse high tops and a Gang Green tee too (ok maybe thatās too much).
He still lives in that house, if that helps.
You are your own worst critic, right?
I think a lot of older pros hate modern footage of themselves as they know they are well past their prime and feel weird being filmed, feel like theyāre gonna be judged, negatively of course. Far from that! Nothing hypes me more than a clip of Gonz skating a curb in 2025.
I always wanted to see footage of my favourite pros cruising on minicamps or skating curbs and we finally see stuff like this these days, after decades of Menikmati and shit. Glad this stuff is in the past where it belongs.
I always liked going to contests too (talking about comps with big names here) and demos (when that was a thing) as I could see how people really skated. I didnāt care about the hammers, I wanted to see how theyād tailslide the ledge I can tailslide.
Remember the intro of Crocodile Done Deal? Cory Kennedyās footage in it is so good. Just him skating like he does with his mates at his local park. The quick clips between 3:44 and 3:46 are simply fantastic. Really inspiring. Would he have filmed that if Meza wasnāt there? Not sure.
Yep, and imagine the pressure youād feel if there were literally millions of old farts like me who revered you as a god. I donāt blame him for not doing it for the camera⦠but also I just want to see!
I now want to see him doing a (static) 5050 or something with Gonz on his YouTube channel.
Totally agree it would be amazing to see him having a roll. His footage on that Element world tour vid was so sick to see.
That was great.
Probably a bit early to be doing interviews really but thereās some interesting bits in there amongst many a ramble.
I listen/ watch living proof because they interview a lot of graffiti heads and people within street culture.
However, when I look at all the skater interviews they have done, the absolute common thread between all the skate guests is addiction and the sad stories that accompany that life.
Thatās when you realise there must be something wrong. Or that the podcast hosts have a weird attraction towards sad stories..?
or that they cross over better, as people from all back grounds/sports have substance and addiction issues, whereas a skater just talking about his new shoe colourway isnāt as appealing to a lot of their audience?
Talking about past addictions and being sober is quite a thing now too, BA said he was happy to talk about his drinking but thought everybody had heard about it now in his Living Proof interview that came out about two weeks ago.
I like Quentinās approach with Beyond Boards. He hardly ever brings up that subject as he thinks a lot of people have already said what they had to say about it in other interviews and focuses on lesser known aspects of the skatersā lives and careers.
Is this the place for this? Extreme content warning, overwhelming nerd fest.
Ed T on Turned out a Punk (Damian from Fucked Ups podcast).
Some good music stories, a cool alternative to the usual questions he gets asked.
i once met a holidaying DC skater at the old Cantelowes park. we skated through town to Southbank, and during the walking bits, i pestered him on Pulaski gossip.
when i asked who was ripping, he didnāt even hesitate: John Igei
Love this quote!
Iām not even skating a Capital board in that photo, either. I had broken my board earlier that day, so I had to borrow somebody elseās board. I think it was a Real board. If you look at the photo, you can tell they had to photoshop it all black because it wasnāt a Capital board. Iām not even wearing a Capital shirt in there, either. I think Iām wearing a Polo shirt because I didnāt know we were shooting an ad. He just gave it to them and they used itā¦
Enjoyable new Kalis interview on the slam blog
