KNOX!!!!

BUT OH! it’s my fault anyway, I was talking about Suciu, he has kids as well right? or does he not?
Actually I did know knox has 3 kids so why did I assume Suciu? I would have kinda assumed Knox might have a job as well as skating so ignore my comment.
I did read LS’s comment as a tongue in cheek play on skateboarding is/isn’t a job.

Dude, Suciu hasnt got any kids.
To quote Slap, ‘Tom Knox is Suciu for people who have sex (kids)’

I would hope that New Balance, Dickies etc pay Tom enough money to not have to have a job.
Suciu definitely gets paid WAY MORE than Tom though.

Haha, what a dick.
Anyway, looking back at my comment, it still stands as i’m not serious anyway. He’d be a great dad with that lifestyle.

Sorry. I really disagree with this.

Tom has 3 kids and clearly works his arse off. He is so involved with all the brands he rides for and creates so much content that there is no way he isn’t putting in a solid week.

Tom isn’t really on that UK pro skater deal which involves sitting around figuring out his day as it unfolds.

Surely if you’re a British pro skater (even with American sponsors) and you’ve got a family, you would approach skating as a job?

I don’t mean in that regimented 9-5, clocking in for a shift type of way. But if it’s paying the bills, you’re gonna show up each day and not just be casual about it?

Historically, British pros have struggled financially. I would think starting a family has been the tipping point which has convinced many British pros to get a stable, 9-5 job.

Which makes what Knox has achieved all the more impressive. I wonder if starting a family at a relatively young age has worked in his favour in that sense - he still has the income from a lot of top-tier sponsors coming in and doesn’t have to give in to the niggling thought that it could be time to retire.

A good fit here too.

I think this is a subject which is far more complex than this statement allows, but I get you.

How many skateboarders in the world have made enough money to not have to get another job after skating?

I wonder how many have a pension too.

Got to be one of the worst career choices you could ever choose.

Doesn’t look good on CV and no transferable skills.

I remember Tom Watts being offered to go to the states for 3 months with Supra to ‘try and make it’.

He turned it down. (He had / still has a really good job.)

At the time I was like wtf are you doing, a few years later completely understood his decision.

Yeah but, free tee shirts and more stickers than you can shake a stick at.

Unless you have the talent, I suppose you have to start your own company to stay in the industry. And we’re saturated with those.

I think that is totally the wrong angle. You think Daly Thompson thought he was going to be doing the decathlon for the rest of his life? Or Gareth Southgate was going to be scoring goals for England forever?

Pro skaters move on to other jobs once past their prime. If they are talented enough, they move on to other jobs within their field.

Negotiate good contracts, kids…

Being a pro skateboarder isn’t for everyone. We’ve all seen talented folk come and go and we all know it isn’t just about talent. Those that do tick all the boxes would tell you that you are talking total rubbish. You think Rowley, Bod Boyle, Colin Kennedy etc. regret their choices? There are 3 pros from the UK off the top of my head who not only have made a solid career choice but also have demonstrable transferable skills.

Hell, just being able to run self employed is a transferable skill, never mind all the other shit you learn.

Manzoori is such a perfect example of transferable skills. And everything else.

One big advantage pro skaters will likely have is a very good understanding of imperial measurements which could prove handy these days.

I still haven’t watched this.

Been wanting to get the telly to myself for days to enjoy it properly.

This is more of a memo to myself to remind me to watch this tonight. Carry on.
