Marc Johnson - RIP

nah, spam all the good stuff. Would be cool to have all his parts in the top post so we can all subject ourselves to a marathon of style.

It was the Lakai MJ shoe which was then rebranded as the Daly,

The first versions were really good, I had a couple pairs. Think it coincided with Lakai switching factories and the quality dropped.

Pretty sure they had just taken pre orders from shops for the latest seasons colourways and the adidas announcement fell in the middle of it which caused Mike/Lakai to panic about shops cancelling orders rather than wait until the orders had shipped. Lose/lose when you put it that way and intentionally plan to load shops up with duff stock. :backhand_index_pointing_up:t3::backhand_index_pointing_up:t3: according to the infamous Jenkem interview.

I’m guessing many people will be saying this now, but I’ve often rewatched that part, I’ll watch almost all of his old and more intense parts in the coming days I’m sure but I’m more likely to back to that one in future.

It was nice to see this photo yesterday, as I remember the coverage the event received very well:

There’s a few things he does in that that are just so nice. The back lip on the makeshift flat bar. Those lines. Must be nice but it comes with a cost

I liked that line with the kickflip noseslide, he was taking the piss a bit but it was all part of it. The song sticks in your head as well.

I love that song for years before that part. A classic banger

I feel like Marc loved a good wooden block with the angle iron edge. In nearly all his parts he does a trick on a 90’s skatepark perma obstscle.

Same here, up there in my top three Stones tunes, but I only recently discovered the ‘12" Special Disco Version’, which isn’t a remix but is just a longer edit with loads more of that funky Bill Wyman (yeah I know) bass and a bit more Keef too. You’ve probably known about it for ages, I just happened to get the 12" the other week

Sorry for tangent in what should be a strictly MJ thread

There is literally no reason for his first line in Man Down, flip up on to the path, pushes around the tree and drops off the path, other than he wanted to do it, which is why it is rad and just some how works.

Same with the Nollie 3 heel line over that loading bay flat gap in Fully flared, nose slide pop over to nothing before hand haha

I was looking back at his old Emerica ads and don’t think I ever saw the footage of this:

But, now I have!

There was a nice post from his son Avery on Instagram. Thought about him a bit as he obviously skates and skates well. Very sad.

Just seen that now, a beautiful post.

I don’t want to detract heavily from everyone paying respect here but the suggestion that a news story like this is (at least the one published by The Guardian) just the result of an AI prompt is off for a couple of reasons.

Conventional newswriting is incredibly formulaic and easy to turn around rapidly, especially if all that’s required is research for basic context and pulling quotes from a secondary source.

The other aspect being that even the most lacklustre, small, regional publications (owned by the likes of Newsquest, Reach or whoever) will often give notice in an article to the effect of “this story was produced by AI with fact-checking/oversight from a journalist”, etc.

Given that The Guardian is one of the most ethical and is considered the second most most trustworthy news organisation in the U.K. (as per Reuters) I’d be surprised for them not to be transparent about AI generated/assisted reporting.

Thought about DMing this instead but I think it’s an important thing to throw out given that AI literacy in regards to media isn’t exactly a readily available thing (no disrespect intended). The idea of basic news journalism being conflated with “AI slop” doesn’t lead to anything healthy in terms of trust in media, long term.

More importantly, back to MJ. @WallyBazoum’s post is touching and there’s been such a beautiful outpouring across skateboarding. Growing up as a kid with Fully Flared on repeat of the TV in the reception of my local park, MJ’s part encapsulates some of my fondest childhood memories, in a way. Looking back now I only realise how much of an influence he had on so many of the older skaters and locals there.

There are those two lines he does in Fully Flared that start with a trick over a brick wall. Both have a flatground trick in the middle. The first one has a double flip which is so nonchalant, the second has a nollie bigger spin which is real wild card and almost looks like it’s not gonna be a make (but also like there’s no chance it wasn’t going to be a make, someone). One like feels more “serious”, one feels more like “goofing around”, both have flatground tricks in the middle that if done by anyone else in that context it wouldn’t look anywhere near as good. And still, both are completely graceful. I feel like that sums him up, in part.

Fast forward and the Pretty Sweet part to Bowie is just so, so perfect. As contentious as the reception to that video is, MJ’s part alone justifies the whole production a hundred times over.

On the subject of music, he’s gotta be on the pantheon of skaters with one of the best soundtracked careers.

Last summer when I was staying at mate’s in SF I went for a solo road trip to Big Sur. On my way down to Monterey, I got stuck in the outskirts of San Jose for 3 hours. I literally stayed in the same square mile for 3 hours. It was really hot, I didn’t have enough water and I couldn’t smoke in that car I had rented. It should have pissed me off but I spent a fair amount of that time thinking about the Tilt Mode vids and MJ’s incredible lines and clips in that area I had never been to, and I was so pumped to just be there as all that footage had always inspired me so much. I remember being there and being stoked on being stoked, almost amused by that.

That’s how cool MJ was to me, he made being stuck in a traffic jam a dope experience.

Thanks for response.

Might not have conveyed what I meant well. Whilst the writing might not be wholly AI produced or “slop”… there’s definitely ways that AI is shaping workflows, making “content” cheaper to produce and making things like this come across news organisations radars.

Aside from the more reputable news outlets, there does seem to be plenty of slop pages producing slop on his passing too.

Some great stuff in this. I used to enjoy the odd combination of him and Biebel in various clips like this.
