Not watched this, but the fact that the Surkit sample is the absolute cornerstone of this tune is well-known. If that’s the gist.

It’s a bit more interesting than just that, he remakes it, but yeah that’s fine crux of it

What do people make of Actress? I’m listening to a bit of his stuff at the moment and at times it seems a bit non existent, like some noise and shuffling sounds but also quite a nice atmosphere, can’t really tell if I like it or not

I’m into it. Totally get your angle, though.

This one is amazing. It’s been on my playlists for a few years now:

I think the non-existent part has made it nice to stick on in the background but has made it hard to pull out more stuff like Maze where I really am into it as a standalone piece.

Yeah that’s good. I’m enjoying the atmosphere off his stuff and I keep coming back to it

Yeah, that is the album Maze is from and the one I’ve gone back to plenty.

The RIP and Hazyville albums I didn’t grab until fairly recently…Listened to them a few times, but they aren’t jumping out like Splazsh does.

Apparently I saw Actress perform the other day in APE, but I have no recollection of it. Shame. That’s a result of a big bottle of Buckfast and a good few cans and two vegan sosig rolls for yer day’s diet, though.

Yeah this is one I bought and sat as heavy rotation in me motor for a while. I think his newest one didn’t really grab me, but shall return to see if my brain can pick up on it better.

Absolutely love Actress and have done for a long time, non-existent is a great way to describe his music tbh. Hazyville and splash are both true all timers for me.

Watched him do a yayoi kusama inspired live set silent disco at tate modern in 2012 and it was fucking incredible. Same year I also saw him dj the Sunday arvo at bestival playing extremely loose disco ish tunes, both exceptional sets. He really can do it all

Just stumbled on Mickey Diamond.

Reigniting my faith in hip hop. DOOM vibes without parodying styles.

Last three albums - all 2023, putting work in - seem pretty solid.

Actress is a weird one. Some pieces I really like and some frustrate me because there is an idea in there and it wasn’t fleshed. Loads of artists do this to me, OPN for one.
I have a very polite internal battle with this stuff all the time. I tend to gravitate to music that has had lots of effort put into it, I like to hear the craft, the depth the artist has gone to to get there, resulting in sporadic but meaty work. There is a lot of music that feel like sketches, ideas that haven’t been explored enough and that results in quick turnaround and prolific work. Kinda feels like cheating to me in a way and I definitely find it hard to be this way with my own music BUT when a track, no matter how simple gets me, all that bullshit doesn’t matter so it’s just pointless inner turmoil.

I saw him DJ at a Palace do, very diverse set, some real up moments like old hardcore tunes, then back to some weird atmospheric stuff, not your usual club set

I just listen patiently to this waiting for the hat to arrive around 3.20

Post up your tunes. Maybe we need a different thread. Or stick it in the gear geek thread?

Listened to this quite a few times.

nah, no one needs to hear that. I have in the past though.
