Really love this doc on Chess records. It’s really the story of the Chicago side of my family. The Jewish immigrants in Chicago lived on the west side and started Maxwell St Market or " Jew Town " which was where everything in the black community happened. My great uncle Mel was good pals with Leonard Chess and they ran the clubs that all the music took place in. At that time a black man could not incorporate a company if he wanted to so it was the Maxwell St Jewish guys that started Chess records. My uncle Stephen just passed away this year he taught me so much about that time when i lived there in the 90’s. Muddy Waters would come to my great aunt Joan his moms for her brisket on the regs. Etta James would be at his house and family parties when he was a kid. People say they ripped the black community off but it was much more involved than that and it simply wouldn’t have happened otherwise. Leonard and Muddy were like blood brothers.
