Had the total misfortune to see a band called Gentleman’s Dub Club. Fucking hell. Someone have a word.

It’s OK to be an all white reggae band, I suppose, but it’s not OK to put on a fake Jamaican accent throughout the whole thing.

Ha ha I love that this happened. That Happy Land comp had got some absolutely wicked and really hard-to-find tracks on it.

Ha. Had some friends at uni who dragged me along to see them a couple of times. It’s fed my deep seeded annoyance of white people with dreads

Is that the record is got mixed up with? ha ha.
That Happy Land comp is sick.

I always thought the only reason ska punk got invented was so white people could sort of live out their Jamaican dreams without having to ham up an accent.

Haha true

They aren’t even a dreadlocks kind of band, more a cunty little topknot vibe. Didn’t stop matey doing the Bob Marley “fly your locks” dance while going on about “di’ 'ighgrade”.

And people were into it! Felt like being in They Live or something.

I had dreads in the 90s, but for more of a Matt reason. Also because I’ve got really thick hair that doesn’t do much else, and got them done at a party one New Year’s Day. Kept them for about five years I think.

It was just the fake accent that bugged me. I’m probably over reacting because no-one else seemed concerned. I did notice one of the security filming on his phone though with a WTF look on his face

There’s loads of Rasta cosplay going on, and loads of shit reggae that seems to have been created for middle class Coldplay fans to nod along to at midday at some boutique food festival, but that band you mentioned are notoriously shit. Even the name turns my stomach. Reminds me of that comedy ‘rapper’, who rapped in a - wait for it - posh accent. Horrible crap for wankers.

Yeah I was worried when I first heard the name. Then the reality was worse than I imagined. Also ‘dub’ isn’t a live thing is it? It’s something you do in the studio later.

unrelated to the conversation but made me think of this, Mad Professor doing ‘dub’ right…

I like UB40 and don’t mind dreads on anyone, but this was minging

Not sure I agree on your definition of live but whatever let’s move on!

I always think of dub as a version of a tune done afterwards, but I’m thinking of Gibbs / Tubby / Upsetter stuff, wasn’t the 60s pretty much the ska era?

change my mind meme
