I know the name but not much more than that. Was he behind the 2 7s clash dub and African dub 3? They’re my all time favourites

Re: That Happy Land album. Does anyone have any recommendations for compilations like this, of more obscure stuff? J.D. Twitch has been putting together some great ones over the years and the Cherry Red Records ones are sometimes good, but I am always on the look out for other stuff.

Basically, any good weird compilation recommendations? 1980s/DIY/Electronica but can be any genre really.

Maybe not that weird but this Blast First compilation hit the spot when it was released.

Just a heads up for the JAMS fans, banquet has the Chill Out bootleg which is rumoured to be by them. Not cheap though but it’s hard to get on vinyl these days

HIA were a mainstay on the ‘Ambient Dub’ compilations. To be fair I’m not sure how well those comps have stood the test of time, but at the time they were being released they were an interesting gateway into other electronic music. I was bang into them and HIA were always a cut above.

On a totally different tip, was listening to this comp of ‘EBM’ stuff (think Nitzer Ebb, Front 242 etc.) the other day and it was hitting the spot: Various - Aktion Mekanik | Releases | Discogs

Treading the line between album proper and compilation of early productions, but Warp are about to re-release the mighty ‘Bytes’ by Black Dog Productions. Every home should have one.

Twitch’s name is on this but it’s basically Fergus from 12th Isle. All Twitch did was add a track by his then-girlfriend.

Thanks for all the recommendations @everyone!

I was just listening to the ‘Miracle Steps’ comp. A video playing at the gallery I went to earlier included that XYR song from the comp in it. A good coincidence!

Is Twitch sound, generally? I have a lot of time for the Optimo show on NTS and love some of the records they’ve put out on the label.

Depends who you ask.

They’re still going as well, or came back. The Discatron EP from a couple of years ago is really nice

I think my copy of bytes ended up in the wrong pile and got given to a charity shop when my parents moved years ago. Hope someone enjoyed it anyway

Fucking hell @anonymity I think I’ve just permanently altered my 8 year old by putting Akhyls on in the car.

Such a banging comp

This is a good shout for quality 90s electronica.

Some more obscure stuff alongside APL (who, along with HIA were also a mainstay of those Ambient Dub comps), and a track by Mark Pritchard that’s up there with the stuff he did on Global Communications’ 76:14 album (under the name Pulusha).

All good punk or pre punk related comps. The Sex on is especially good, McLaren’s jukebox selection

You reminded me I’ve had a sealed copy of this for over 3 years now, sticking it on today

I had that. So gutted it went missing. Seemed to be a go-to for skate video makers at one point too.
