Tinkering is getting harder nowadays, nothing wants to be tinkered with but fuck it, gotto have a go innit. Gas is pretty scary though.

Haven’t got mice or rats in the building have you? I had rats in my house when I moved in and they fucked the electrics gnawing through cables. You’d have to trace the wire through the house and fix any damaged bits.

Caused quite similar sounding symptoms.

Very possibly, plenty on the streets here.

Into week 9 of job hunting after taking voluntary severance back in November and I’m getting turned down at the first stage for jobs that I could probably do with my eyes shut. I know it’s a competitive market etc but I’m thinking my CV must also be shitter than I thought it was. Anyone used a good CV review service or got any tips for getting a better result at the application stage? Thanks

Is it still acceptable to put your photo on a CV? I never have myself as I’m the least photogenic person in the world.

You may be over qualified and the reviewer looks at it and says nope if you’d have too much experience.

Ive rejected people with multiple masters degrees if they were applying for editorial assistant roles because they would be too qualified.

When I left the army we had to do some resettlement stuff, and one thing that stuck out was if someone has a stack of CVs to go through they will only probably spend 5-10 seconds looking at each one. If they see something that puts them off they will bin it straight away because they have so many to go through. It isn’t so much your skills etc it’s more like professional sounding email address, keep it 2 pages (1 double sided)

This, all the way. Seen a lot of CVs in my previous two jobs, and if it’s more than one sheet it’s trying too hard. So much comes down to the personal statement too - because CVs come in so many different formats, the personal statement is the one consistent part (because it’s right there at the start) so if it’s good, the person will keep reading. Under-qualified people have got jobs based on how they come across as human beings in that one paragraph. A good personal statement can easily cancel out any gaps in the rest of it.

It’s a bit like a press release.

The press release analogy is spot on. Have read so many CVs that list everything the person has ever done - nobody cares about GCSEs, swimming badges or paper rounds - the best ones are focussed and have been written / updated for the specific role.

Also don’t put “weekends I mostly go raving” which someone did on a recent one I saw

I take it you’ve tried some recruitment agencies? Lots of bad ones out there I know but if you do find a good one and build a relationship with them it can really help, it can take a lot of the hard work out of it.

Having gone through the same process last year, and also having been on hiring panels in my previous role, I’ve learnt that you can’t always know why you got passed over for a role.

When I was hiring people, the smallest thing might put me off an application - especially if you’ve got 200 CVS to get through. A spelling mistake, maybe the CV was formatted badly, the portfolio link in the PDF doesn’t work etc.

I’d say, no photo, no dob, max 2 sides, PDF not a Word document, make sure links work if you have a web link/email, have your professional profile section first (I’ve 14 years experience working in x sector, most recent as senior manager at x etc), followed by a list of skills, then your most recent job history. No one wants to see a full list GCSEs and A levels if you’ve got a degree or higher so keep that short. Finish with a very short personal section, max 2 sentences.

Also, if the job advert has a list of requirements, mention them all in your cover letter/statement. You might have all the skills, but if you don’t clearly state that then the hiring manager won’t know.

With both my old jobs some people seemed to think it’d be impressive to say that they DJed three nights a week, or were starting a label or something. Kind of need you in the office at 10am, mate…

I think if I was applying for an entry-level job I’d try to act like an Undercover Boss. Asking about everybody’s personal life, and if they can afford shoes for their kids on the wage and all that. ‘How long have you been here? Really?! Do upper-management even listen to your input? What would you change?’ Everybody would probably be super nice to you for a while, although you’d need to listen to a lot of sob stories in the canteen.

Haha secret boss … the employee who thinks it’s okay to still act like a dick in front of a film crew while they train up the new guy in a wig and fake glasses gets me very time. What is their thought process? Once this goes out and Hollywood sees how cool I am, I won’t need this job anymore? :joy:

Thanks all. I’ve done a fair bit of recruiting too so know the fatigue you get looking through loads of CVs and how easy it is to start hating the people applying for your job just for a tiny typo ha!

I think the hardest bit I’m finding is squeezing enough content into 1-2 pages. It’s currently 3-4 pages long which i know is too much but I always front load the most relevant stuff on the first page. The advice is always talk about what you achieved rather than just describe the tasks of your job and it’s hard to do that properly unless you have a job that lends itself to black and white ‘results’ (mine isn’t) and even then it sounds like Palace advert bullet points

  • Did loads of sales fam, P went up £5m
  • Merked customer retention by 120%
