From memory, Adam was a very close friend of the organiser.
There were a lot of people taking part and a £4k prize purse (Which was pretty solid in 2004 or whenever it was).
Previous DITCs had fuck all as 1st place, I think. Like…we got 2nd for one of them and got a book to share. Which I kept. Don’t tell @Mark
Anyway, everyone went down to the awards event/party expecting a load of fun prizes, etc. as there had been previously and a good split of the money. So, y’know…not just a book but £250 for best trick, best slam, daftest clip, etc. some money for 2nd and 3rd. Something like that.
And then the whole prize giving lasted about a minute. £4k to one person. The only guy in the room who wasn’t a ‘proper’ skateboarder took it. Thanks for coming. It was quite strange.
The close friend part was probably just a very nice way to pile into and support a negative idea. Free(?) booze and a lot of people feelings…Not really a moment for clarity.
It would have been a lot more fun and probably led to a DITC IV but after that evening, I think most people left feeling pretty bummed and like it was time to move on.
Great series of videos, though. I took part in three (the first being the first edit II ever made) and every one of the was fucking excellent to be involved with.
Aside from having James Gardener in one. That guy was a pain in the arse. lulz.
I guess it was another weird awards deal. There was a first place prize and then later, the organiser came up to me/us(?) and gave over that book saying it was for 2nd place.
In hindsight, he probably did it to everyone involved.
Also, nothing for the Jensen one that same year. That’s the most well known of any DITC part, easily.
just finished listening, so this was required vieiwng
its tripping me out hearing about skating and filming in 2003; i was helping make a video at the same time, and unofficially dubbed our project ‘First Portraits Gonna Be Yeah Right’, ha
Great listen and interesting to hear Toby feel that his section wasn’t as good as it could have been.
The part is flawless to me. I wonder what we could have got if Toby had made the section he wanted
Toby’s part was always my favourite from Portraits. I’d watch it back to back a couple of times before going skating. Stoking yet calming at the same time. It put me in the right frame of mind to skate solo flatground lines on loop all day. Classic.
I guess there are always going to be tricks you didn’t get with time restraints, weather or injury, ect, or not being happy with the way a trick or line looked and so on and wish you could of refilmed it. The filmer using a trick you feel is throw away. I feel like it’s common for skaters to never be 100% happy with footage, not getting enough also seems to be a big one that pros talk about after their careers are over.
The way you imagine filming your part in your head could never live up to the reality.
