Got into Bowie through the first FTC vid and then heavily from Steve olsons section from tentacles of destruction. We didn’t know what the song was so me and my mate pretty much bought every DB album on tape trying to find it. (Quicksand off of hunky dory) Ahh them pre-internet days of not knowing things.
Skate videos cemented my love for Bowie and probably made me seek some more of his stuff.
This is probably my fav Bowie song (it’s a cover he translated to English)
Sorry that happened to you man. Doesn’t seem to have affected you though, so good on you. Hit me up if you ever need to talk.
I never did get the doors. There’s a couple of good ones but it’s all a bit wacky for me.
Fuck the Doors. Even Jim Morrison’s dad was a twat.
He had a lot to do with America getting involved in that war down in Vietnam.
I think a lot of adolescents have a Doors phase (or at least they used to). I know I did.
Some girls at my school liked them, but they probably just fancied the singer.
Pat Duffy and Ocean Howell both made them tolerable for the duration of those segments, but they’re the worst pub-blues band I’ve heard in my life.
A friend that skated at the time had a mad Doors faze, put me off them for life, unless used right on a video part, no thanks.
For me it probably had a bit to do with discovering psychedelics around the same time. Granted they were pretentious as fuck, but they did more than a few good tunes.
Skate videos are without a doubt why I have such a wide range of taste with music. With the likes of Sorry and This is Skateboarding introducing me to Bowie and The Cure while The DC video brought Gangstarr into my ears.
I’m sure everyone feels the same about their youth but being 14 and having those videos and many more classics come out in such a short space of time really does make it feel like “the golden era” in hindsight. Rose tinted glasses though I’m sure…
It was my job for around 20 years to decide what music people could buy / listen to, and I would like to confirm that they definitely do not. And that’s a scientific fact.
Didn’t you have any of those VHS tapes of trippy visuals over Aphex Twin and Orb tunes where you were? Or maybe you’re 70 years old, I don’t know.
Ha, I watched more than my fair share of FSOL videos for sure. If I could be bothered I’d quote back to you all that screed you posted about music being subjective, with no opinion more worthy than any other
Exactly! My opinion is as valuable as anybody else’s, I’m making a facetious joke about that. I don’t give a shit what car somebody drives, what music they listen to or how they wipe their arse.
Making a point that I hate the Doors, but anybody else listening to them doesn’t affect my life.
Good shout with FSOL, they did a few of those.
Yeah, I rewatched a few not too long ago and they’ve aged surprisingly well.
Don’t like The Doors now but listening to The End whilst driving to Butlins with my dad was kind of cool and opened my ears to some more interesting music.
My mum used to have 1 tape in her car.
Guitar Man is a banger though and Diary is also a classic.
Yes!! Single handedly got me into the Doors. I think Koston did the same thing with Eric B and Rakim and Carroll with De La Soul.
Colin McKay got me into the Steve Miller Band. Not quite as cool.
Special thanks to Jason Rogers for Gang Starr too. Although “Like making love, I never stop thrusting” got me in trouble with my Mum when she heard it.
Gino and wu tang innit.
Haven’t seen a tape in so long.
