I bought a Brother one about 10 years ago to make some curtains (because it was cheaper to buy it and the material than it was actual curtains). Both are still going strong… and I use the sewing machine often for little hemming jobs & knocking up the occasional peg bag.

Would love to make stuff like Tony (@tonyr.maker) from Sewing Bee… one day.

yeah, recently bought one to turn up a few pairs of curtains and made cushions out of a random curtain I found. I do plan to make some other stuff when I have time.
Just the idea of everything in my home to be bespoke, made by me or the people I know or like is something I have always wanted so a sewing machine has been a long time coming.
Next, a lathe.

Solid response! Which brother models do you have @Chopper @doowyrag
I was thinking about getting an entry level John Lewis one as I got a gift card from work for Christmas that would contribute to a big chunk of it and I wouldn’t have to put my hand in my pockets too deep.

Was thinking of spending about £150 and seeing if I actually get into it, then selling on and getting something heavier down the line if I stick with it.

Reason I got one is that my Mums one is still going strong after 45 years of use .

This is the one I use

You can probably get one second hand or refurbished for less

The next model down is on sale for your price bracket

I had to check and mine is an X-5.

Pretty basic model…

We’ve got a janome. I’m not allowed to play with it.

I’ve had many over the years domestic and industrial but never a new one. Worth their weight in gold. I made my own 3 piece wool suit for my wedding, cost about £80 in materials in the end.

I also have a lathe, had a huge 3 phase ex college one when we lived in England but sold it when we moved to France, brought my ‘small’ one with me, also worth its weight in gold.
The only drawback with things like this apart from their weight and needing space is that it makes you incapable of buying anything you could hypothetically do yourself, so I’ve still got a pair of cupboard doors in our kitchen without pulls because I don’t want to spend the €20 on a set of brass ones when I could make them myself for €17 of materials.

My Mrs shop was a sewing shop, so if anyone needs their machine repaired I know someone. Or if you want some jazzy fabric designs she has plenty of seamless patterns

It’s been a good year for getting out and meeting people - I spent too long skating alone.

Sorry to interrupt the sewing machine chat, does anyone know much about Scott Bourne? My brother lives in France and their kids go to the same school, got chatting on the school run, he asked me about him but I don’t know anything about him. Think he had a guest board on Death (?)

He’s read over 100 books!

Full black sleeves, which is pretty gnarly tbf

Yeah don’t ask him why he’s got black sleeves but a white heart. That’ll get your brother extra points.

Scott pointed out in an interview that he wished people asked that instead…

His black sleeve tatts incorporates an unlinked heart into the design.

Written more books than he’s read. He’s skateboarding’s own Garth Marenghi.
