Arcteryx is cool and I’ve got a couple of friends who are properly into outdoors stuff, ice climbing, scaling actual mountains etc and they’re all into it. I’m not outdoorsy in the slightest though which is why I’m hesitant to spend >£300 on a waterproof jacket. I’ve looked at their stuff a lot but it’s more than I probably need, given the most action it’ll see is a few festivals and the odd trip to the Lake District.

Unless as you say I could find something on sale

If on sale DC snowboard jackets are pretty good.

I don’t have a Snow Peak jacket but I do have a Snow Peak tarp and some odd bits of kit. All well made but tbh it’s a bit unnecessarily pricey. Japanese innit, so you know it’s been thought about and has been put together properly.

Arcteryx is top notch, does the job and because its price point is a little higher than comparable product it means that, (up until recently), not every Tom, Dick and Harry was wearing it. Can’t fault any of their gear that I’ve had.

Patagonia is an obvious choice. Again, it’s well made and functions well. Had a load of their stuff and it lasts and will take a beating.

I’m assuming from what you said about trying not to go too roadman that you’re giving North Face a wide berth. I like their stuff but I get you and you have to pick carefully now as its quality isn’t always what it once was.

Thing is though, these days, every brand has connotations outside of what it’s designed for. TNF = roadman, Arcteryx/ Patagonia = Gorpcore., Snow Peak = cokey fuckwits like this dickhead.

Other brands outside of the obvious that might be worth you considering - Mammut, Rab, Hagllofs, Mountain Equipment and Montane.

Round my way (east London) Arcteryx is worn by seemingly everyone now, and the worst weather those jackets are seeing is Victoria Park in November. Which is why from a fashion pov I was leaning towards Snowpeak, but also their pricing seemed £100 or so quid cheaper on equivalent jackets - but both are probably more expensive than need to be.

I’m easily swayed by ‘it’s made in Japan it must be better’ marketing haha, but tbh I’d forgotten about Patagonia so maybe they’re a shout. Hadn’t heard of Haglofs either so will check them out

I’ve got a non waterproof Klattermusen jacket which is really nice, but their stuff is all over £500 so that’s a no go

Gonna throw Musto in too. It’s mainly sailing. but if you want to stay dry then a jacket that works in the Atlantic in a storm isn’t a bad idea. Also zero roadman will ever wear it

The vast majority of my sailing kit is Musto. The quality and functionality is great. You can’t go wrong except you will look like you’ve fallen off a yacht. I have a BR2 jacket that’s 12 years old and is still going strong. The super high neck collars are a godsend in high winds. I have got a couple of Gill jackets and they’re not a patch on my Musto kit.

I got one of their ski shells and it’s a pretty standard look but great quality and in the sale was £90

This is the perfect balance of a badass jacket without looking like a twat, and a well good price.
Really good brand too.

There must be a meme about people in hackney dressing like a very expensive geography field trip to go to the corner shop

+1 for Musto, the mrs had it when she did her round the world stint, it’s epic stuff and no one except sailors will know the brand

I have a TNF Nuptse from about 2000, bought it from convent garden way when they had those 2 roads that were stack full of outdoor gear, still going strong. Hasn’t even got that telltale hip wear mark from griptape. Doubt the quality these days is up to scratch.

Also got a Canada Goose explorer parka, cost a fortune and I didn’t believe the Mrs that I’d thank her but it’s seriously amazing. Still going strong and good for -20c, been back to CG for a free repair after 6 years.

There’s a whole account dedicated to it!

Hey went to the dentist the other day and apparently I have a bad root on a wisdom tooth, needs pulling but they had to refer me to the hospital as it’s a minor operation. Would be fine with that, it’s at King’s which is a good hospital but there’s a 6 month wait for that.

ANyone got experience with private dentist(s), I don’t know where to start and how to tell if they’re good or not, online reviews are easily boosted

Ah I’ve heard of this. It actually puts me off getting New Balances even though they’re good shoes

Yeah I had two root canals done privately last year. Great service but bad expensive - 900 each

Was hoping it would be a bit less. I’ve got 1 so I can deal, and don’t fancy giving it 6 months to get worse. How did you find the place?

I was desperate so I just went on positive reviews locally

Cheers. I feel like doing the dentist for negligence, I told her I’d cracked a tooth and she said “can’t see anything wrong, no need for an xray” I had to go back 2 months later and tell them to do an xray, cue “oooof” from the dentist and assistant when they looked at it
