I think conspiracy theories are fun. They’re a good way of telling a story that makes sense of the all the confusing stuff out there.
We have so much information to work with, that it’s only natural for people to use it to create these narratives to explain the unexplainable.
I think it is replacing older story telling tropes that created monsters and supernatural creatures to blame these things on. In some ways it also fills the gap created by the decline in religious belief.
I’m 50 this year though, and I have never seen a ghost or an alien and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a conspiracy theory be proven true.
They’re absolutely flying out, those shops who have taken the dirty money are all millionaires now. Harmony Korine pays them with anonymous cryptocurrency so it won’t show on their accounts.
By all means indulge in some conspiracies as long as you can retain some critical distance and judgement. I just don’t want to see a whole bunch of people ending up supporting extreme political viewpoints because they’ve gone down the conspiracy YouTube to MAGA pipeline.
Very much like there should be a requirement for religious tomes to include some boilerplate on the first page that reads, ‘Any similarity to persons living or dead is purely coincidental…etc’, conspiracy theories should be prefaced by, ‘* for entertainment purposes only’. It would save a lot of bother all round.
I don’t know if that surprises me or not, maybe I’m just too far away from a city scene.
That being said, my remote school in Devon is full of kids in all ages wearing head to to Drama/Always etc and have zero interest in skateboarding, so I imagine if they skate they would be buying EDGLRD?
Each day I become more thankful my dad hasn’t discovered YouTube rabbit holes and the worst parts of Facebook yet. I feel like it’s only a matter of time before he does and then he’ll fully be off the deep end.
Worst online habit he’s got at the minute is not using incognito mode and leaving tabs open in the background on their shared iPad when he wants to look at some grot. He’s about 18 months away from retiring and can only assume that’s a timebomb I’ll have to address then.
Yes ok I definitely avoid that stuff I have never watched Joe rogan or Andre Tate but I did watch a bit of Russell Brand just because someone who worked for me kept bringing up his arguments. Luckily that’s now scrubbed from my algorithm too.
