Was going to go to the free listening event part of this but never got round to booking it. A sunny afternoon at the Barbican is always enjoyable regardless.
I saw Battles just after they released Gloss Drop and they didn’t play any of the stuff from the first (arguably best) album.
They lost Tyondai before they did Gloss Drop so that was a massive part of Mirrored and the first EPs. Never been the same since unfortunately.
It’s just 2 of them now and they tried to do Atlas but unfortunately Ian messed up the looping and threw Stainier off and they ended it in a big messy drum solo. It was ok, shit happens but it was definitely lacking 2 more pairs of hands with brains for ideas.
Seems to be par for the course these days, the great days off Warp, and the other label I used to follow, Ninja Tune, seem to be behind them. Every once in a while we may get a release from Autechre or Aphex Twin, but the new stuff seems to have really lost it’s edge quite considerably.
The Intertwat is alight with rumblings of something new from Boards of Canada, new merch was released and they just did some production for someone else, so the conspiracy theorists seem to think a new albums on it’s way, but I won’t hold my breath
People have said rumblings have been going on for 12 years. Past 6 years have been yawningly identical with people saying it’s happing and then nothing does. “it’s this year, I can feel it!, they liked a tweet” etc
Jeez.
I did kinda go with a miniscule hope that there might be something BoC related there a hint or something but I didn’t catch anything.
I did see a guy in front of me come out of the hall and pick up a record that was left outside. Looked unfamiliar, like a test press and the guy and his mate were puzzled to what it was and it did make me think for 1 second that it could be the start of a new campaign just like the one for Tomorrows harvest.
I do think that warp maybe wanted to showcase younger artists that were more flamboyantly arty because they are at the Barbican. Slauson Malone in particular was really annoying. The dude must be able make listenable music but decided to just play guitar badly and scream and act out. And not in good way because sometimes those things can be wicked.
Warp’s glory days are well behind them at this point.
Say that to anyone Warp-affiliated (even diplomatically) and you’ll get the ‘you need to realise it’s not the mid 90s anymore grandad’ patter.
Objectively speaking they put out a load of amazing stuff from a range of people across years and styles, but they were actually never the most consistent label in terms of quality control imho.
Do you mean Crackington as in Crackington Haven? If so, it’s a good choice. A sheltered bay with a cool little beach there, the cafe’s nice and the surf can be good when it’s crazy big or blown out elsewhere along the coast. The walk on the SW Coast path from Crackington to Widemouth and back is a good one. Maybe not easy with little kids though. It’s not a killer but it’s kind of rugged.
Anglesey, it’s so under-rated loads of really quiet little beaches and campsites. I’d recommend taking a van and touring round a few spots but you could equally pick one spot and drive around.
I never rated it until I did a campervan trip round the edge. it’s like a mini Ireland.
I’ve got family in Trearddur Bay and LlanfairPG. I like Amlwch and that area.
There’s a sick little campsite run by this nice fella called Andrew which is right by Ynys y Fydlyn beach which is one of my favourite places. It’s rocky but if you get good weather it’s unreal. There’s hardly ever anyone there because it’s a pain in the ass to drive to, but if you stay at the campsite it’s a nice walk down.
