think i prefer the black. can someone please buy some and let me know if they suck?
Just seen those new Ave’s are £95. Ouch.
Skytops are to blame for this sort of shit. £50 is standard pro model price, surely? £60 I’ll accept if it’s tech as fuck.
Skytops? Pretty sure Muska’s éS shoe was the first £100 skate shoe.
I wouldn’t pay £95 for those, especially when you get Crockett 2’s for about 50 now.
I would say online availability and mega sales are as much to blame.
Abit like when you order Dominos pizza, you only do so if you have a voucher. Eventually the voucher becomes redundant because the full price has been pushed up so much that your price with the voucher, is near enough what it cost before vouchers were everywhere.
The amount of shoes you used to find for £30 were huge, now it’s like finding a needle in a haystack.
The éS Muska was £90/£95? Nike can be around the £80 skate shoe price range quite often. Has any skater other than Muska and Penny worn the Skytop? All black shoes are in danger of looking too ‘back to school’. Usually the cheaper option aimed at kids in the range. Which doesn’t help.
And that was 22 years ago…
When I first started in 99 you’d be lucky to find any shoes below about £70, it’s actually quite weird that prices haven’t gone up much more really.
Shoes back then were mostly made in either Japan or mainly S. Korea. Now they’re made in cheaper countries, with the effect that it seems the price has remained static 20 years later.
Can anyone remember when Rowley first started skating in Vans Eras etc and it was the peak of puffy shoe era there were comments in Thrasher that Rowley’s new shoe was going to be the envy of petrol pump attendants everywhere…
I remember when I first sold Half Cabs they were £39.99 RRP, didn’t have any for a few seasons and then they were £59.99… I don’t think it’s that shoes haven’t changed price, it’s that Vulcs have come up in price to match the tech shoes of 20 years ago… The price of some Janoski’s is ridiculous…
Yeah that makes sense to a point but then lots of other industries have seen their factories move to cheaper countries and they’ve upped the pricing regardless.
Am I imagining a time where Era’s, old skools and authentic were £36?
I remember the first version of Emerica laced being £38
Hasn’t happened with boards though.
Could be wrong on all that, it’s an educated guess…
Yeah they were, and there was the argument of paying either £70-£80 for some teched out DC/eS, or get two pairs or Vans/Emerica Vulcs for the same price…
I think it’s changed the perception of price, because I remember buying the Kalis first time round, must have been 70-80 quid and I happily dropped that, whereas the new one is maybe £85 and there’s no way I’d pay that, and it’s 20 years later…
It felt weird having a shop that had Emericas for £40 and they didn’t sell, and then stinking colourway SBs would go at £80 all day…
Just saw the Kalis OG is £105… Ooof.
That’s some tonks beef talk right there!
The hardest white shoe I’ve ever seen to keep clean too. You have to get some of those white gloves they use to handle old books to even pick them up.
I think the og one or perhaps the Lynx is the last white shoe I bought… I’ve only had black and occasional burgundy for 20 years, would feel a bit “Hello fellow kids!” if I got the new ones… (but still want them)
Yeah and I’m far from an expert, just seems an odd one to me.
I guess they have tried to push up the prices of trainers in general lately, look at how much people regularly fork out for Boosts or Yeezy’s etc.
