It’s in progress. Seen lots of people wearing them on insta. Will be interesting to see who the first big name active pro they pick up is.

Looks very much that way going by that account! That recent Gino clip is in there as well. I’ve never thought about skating them but all the Asics I’ve had in the past have been great quality and fit very well.
The shoes Gino’s wearing look like Gel Vikkas. I thought they looked good for skating in so bought a pair. They’re really flat and square sided. Wore them for about half an hour and rolled my ankle badly running out of a bailed something or other. They’re now living in my ‘I’ll decide what to do with them later pile’ of shoes.
They look nice in that purple colourway.
Here’s my purchase. Swayed by the gum sole. Unfortunately, given my experience, I’ve had to stick them, along with non skate shell toes, in the probable ankle buster category.

I thought Gino had just got on Adidas?
I don’t know if he was actually on adidas after he left Nike. I thought he just had that Samba colourway in the Respect Your Roots series of shoes adidas put out. Joey Bast and Drake Jones had Shelltoes when they first started it.
Gino was pictured in Asics pretty soon after that Samba was released. I assumed in retrospect that when he was spotted in adidas shoes prior to his Samba coming out he was just wearing the free shoes he’d got whilst adidas worked on his colourway.
Now he could be on Asics or not for all I know. It certainly looks that way though eh. End of the day though, he is Gino and, as @anonymity pointed out in Joel’s podcast, he’s one of those dudes that’s just so cool that people are just going to be queuing up to give him free shit.

Nike should never ever have let any of the OG Nike SB crew go, let alone have to take on new sponsors. Huge disrespect and a big black mark against Nike’s legitimacy in skateboarding IMHO.

They’ve already started doing this.
Kasper van Lierop (sp) who used to be the main dude at Nike is doing something for ASICS and they’ve got Brent Atchley and a few others already.

Also ASICS is Japanese owned (iirc) and is the official Jap Olympic sponno so probably going to get a fair bit of airtime related to skating moving towards.

They had the Japan only program with those mad looking space shoes.
ASICS now have an international team. Like you said, Brent Atchley, Monica Torres, Walker Ryan, Kieron Wooley, Gino and some others I can’t remember. I think this time around they’re revamping previous ASICS shoes rather than developing a new skate shoe from scratch.
As mentioned Jake Harris (and Quentin De Briey) have been filming the team in Japan recently.
Yeah, they have been sponsoring skaters in Japan for a couple of years.
They are basically the direct competitor of New Balance (in the same way you’d say Nike and Adidas were) with their huge running focus.
So, once NB started to gain traction in skateboarding, it becomes no surprise to begin to see ASICS step in.
