No, not really.

I said I don’t think that.

So people do feel guiilty about listening to music then? Why? Why would you not want to tell people what you listen to for fun? How depserately insecure must a person be to be worried that their taste will somehow make people think less of them?

I appreciate you explaining the etymology of the phrase, but it’s not one I have any trouble understanding. Apologies if I’m not being clear enough, but I’m only trying to say that people shouldn’t feel guilt when they’re listening to music for fun.

Yeah, but if you like something it’s not a guilty pleasure, it’s something to you like. It’s usually used because they know it will be frowned upon and used to play down them daring to like a song. Almost trying to disarming any criticism they know is going to come their way for just saying it.

Also see to a lesser extent ‘cheeky’ put in front of anything, to make going out to socialise out of normal ‘socialising hours’ seem okay…
‘Let’s have a cheeky Nando’s’
‘Let’s go for a cheeky pint’

Instead of just going ‘I feel like going out on a Tuesday’, haha.

“Cheeky” is definitely a good shout. Drinking on a Tuesday doesn’t count if it’s a little bit cheeky.

Isn’t a guilty pleasure putting 4 sugars in your tea?

No, that’s just a crime.

Of which some people are guilty of but find pleasure from?

Criminals.

The point judithpriest made about new morrissey is a good shout in terms of enjoying cultural artifacts, performances etc by artists who are reprehensible in other aspects of their life, or where lyrics might be genuinely dodgy.

I can understand “guilty pleasure” being used in those cases. Beyond getting caught up in questions of aesthetic perceptions around taste. Like what about listening to “Remix to Ignition”, “Don’t Stop 'til You Get Enough” or some Glitter Band tune? In those cases I’d argue that there’s a difference between listening to them at home (enjoying them in private or whatever), and playing them in public as part of a dj set or using them on the soundtrack for a section (ie promoting them publicly in some way without any context or reflection).

Personally I’m happy to enjoy music, books, films etc made by bastards, and I’m pretty comfortable making a separation in my mind between the author’s views and whatever value/enjoyment I get from the work itself, but it does affect how I might share that enjoyment in public. Maybe “guilty” is the wrong word though cos it implies some kind black-and-white moral attitude and a self-punishing perspective?

But yeah if you like electro swing then go for it, I don’t give a fuck.

That’s the thing, people don’t give a fuck, it’s a pretty defunkt saying that people use as a way of saying that the music in question is contrary to what you’d assume they liked. It’s more an jovial way of saying, check me out, i’m a bit kookier than you thought.

There is a darker side to bullying over silly things as music tastes, it does happen but the phrase “Guilty Pleasure” is pretty far removed from that i’d say.

Someone asked for 5 once at SS20. Carpenter IIRC doing work in the stock room.

He said “thats a mellow one”.

That might be one of the reasons I hate it so much.

That’s fair, I can see why you’d hate it, i’m not saying I like it just that it’s a thing and it’s not got a sinister backstory like many other sayings that are coming to light recently.

My mum has 3 now and cut down from 4. I grew up making them like that and assumed it was normal for a long time.

I definitely never suggested it was anything remotely like that.

Ha, I know

I think stuff often gets consciously/cynically marketed as a “guilty pleasure”, because it increases the desirability of that product. Especially food (M+S, Nandos, all that “dirty burger” stuff). People get an extra kick out of it in an “it feels so wrong, and yet so right” kinky Catholic kinda way. It suggests playfully forbidden escapist indulgence.

Posting this just now cos I was on a lazy youtube binge and he came up:
Brent Atchley is a guy who seems to have an unreasonable amount of hangtime (0.57 and 3.52 as examples, but there are lots). I also like his tendency to sit back on his board, landing with his back foot on the tail ready for the next trick rather than bolts, it gives him a nice flow and makes some of his tricks happen more unexpectedly (like the push into super quick 360flip at 4.16).

Jak Pietryga’s also got that thing where you don’t necessarily know what kind of trick is about to happen then boom out of nowhere it’s a nollie back heel.

Also, does anyone know what that thing is called when people do an ollie and somehow bonk the middle of their board off the rail? Never got how that was possible.

Weirdly, ‘guilty pleasure’ still makes me think of a ruddy-cheeked vicar gleefully spanking a buxom nun’s bare bottom with a hymn book. Guessing I saw that once when I was a kid, I just hope to fuck it was on some Saturday night variety entertainment TV programme and not irl.

Atchley part is so good. That front 3 over the sausage in that last line at burnside is amazing.
