Really little things can get annoying on a run if they aren’t just right. I’ve had loads of socks that were wrong and I bought three hats until I found one I liked that wasn’t too hot but had enough of a sweatband, I’ve had it about six years now and it’s completely threadbare.
I can’t remember, are you somewhere really hot? I don’t bother with a drink while I’m out but also I never run much further than ten miles in one go.
Oh yeah the water is for the really long ones like you said 10 miles +. Otherwise I just get on.
Would love to wear a hat but it turns out I sweat so fucking much off my head I need to wear a headband.
So yeah: headband, short shorts with long liner, sleeveless tees. My younger self hates me. Oh and one of them micro bum bags for my phone.
Go to a proper running shop and get fitted for a quality pair of trainer - the sort of place that will get you running on a treadmill and analyse your stride pattern in a few different pairs to make sure you’re wearing something which keeps your feet centred. Made a world of difference to me a few years ago and have been using Asics t500s since.
After 15 years of Asics Cumulus and comfy feet but a bad back I’ve just gone to zero drop and switched to Altra Torin Knit 3.5 and the back pain disappeared overnight. They look fucking awful but it’s done the trick for my back.
The pains all gone down to my Achilles, feet and calves instead but still preferable. I sort of trot like an old man jogging to retrieve his quid from a trolley across Morrisons car park nowadays.
Does anyone have a supinated gait (foot rolls outwards)? I’ve done a bit of running since lockdown and start to get quite bad knee pain when I go any further than about 5-6 miles. This may be down to wear and tear in the joint from 30+ years of skating, but I suspect it might be to do with my supinated gait. When I started road cycling I used to get really bad knee pain until I fitted wedges under my cleats to cancel out the supination and it completely cured it. I’ve read that it’s harder to treat with orthotic running insoles, which is more helpful if you have a pronation.
Was getting knee pain for a long time after every run and chatted to my running nerd mate who said I needed to change up my stride. Instead of long manly lengths try to make them shorter. Took some getting used to but the knee pain went after about a week or so.
Yeah this definitely helps, when you’re taking shorter strides then you’ll naturally tend to land less with your heel so your foot can do its thing and take some of the impact away from your knees, plus you’ll go faster. But also if you suddenly start doing loads of running you can expect some aches and pains, just back off the miles a bit and build it up slowly.
This is what I read too - shorten stride, aim to land on balls of feet underneath your body not in front, minimal arm movement, shoulders forwards but head back and upright. Aka like your Dad used to run.
I was a monster runner until my cartilage gave out.

I won’t take anyone seriously unless they are running in little shorts.
I really rated Mizuno shoes when I was doing high mileage.
Don’t forget to put vaseline on your nipples for the really big runs.
Nice, I’m doing the usual stuff and up to 48km but with one kid and another about to arrive fitting in more mileage is hard to do but guess it’s the way to go. Did you do some of the majors?
