The Bunt

Anyone who was skating at the World park is a legend IMHO.

His skateboarding is legendary, outside of that not so much. How can we forget his ā€˜upriver’ comment, of all the people to have a go at I’d say Kalis is one of the worst choices you could make. It was brilliant when Dyrdek responded by calling himself upriver. All very entertaining though, so maybe he is a great lad after all.

I guess we all have different ideas of what legend means.
I see all people as amazing, skilled beings that are also heavily flawed and all sorts of other stuff thrown into the mix in varied amounts. Dill had built up an exceptional nollie and pop and to fakie shove it over a barrier is inconceivable, his style was interesting and looked cool in many ways and times over the years. He is perfectly in his rights to use that to think that his input is enough to talk how he talks and everyone gives him a platform, it is what it is.

I just see it all as luck as to where you end up in life and the decisions you make to steer through it with lots of help and opportunities that present themselves. His skill and persona guided him enough for people to give him opportinities. Nice one Dill, I respect that but I’m not about to be startstruck by any of it.

Being on 101. Being on Vita. Being on 23. The Winnie the Pooh deck.

I will admit I don’t like much of Dill’s personal creative output or later years stuff, but plenty of people did.

Gets legend status for me.

If you think that those opportunities make him a legend then fair enough, all good.

In my understanding a legend is a story that is passed down, and so the actors in a story like the World Industries one are all part of it and all become legendary characters in their own right. That’s just how I see it.

Trilogy 101 line up. Everything!

Is it possible to be a legend and Wally at the same time?

I like Dill’s 101 Snuff part best, because he still has that awkward teenager thing going on. It’s also why I love early Steve Olson Foundation footage. Awkward gawky teenage misfit skate footage rules.

Confident young man Trilogy onwards Dill is way less interesting to me.

So do you have to be a legend ā€œon and off the boardā€* to be a true legend in your eyes?

  • lol every skateboarder interview intro ever!

Definitely a legend in my book. Look at the videos he’s been in (and held his own in) over the years. Last part in Photo alone is pretty legendary. After Photo came out I definitely started rolling my trouser legs up, Dill style, and got his Vita shoes (which were pretty sick at the time). I found his Bunt interview a mix of interesting and cringey but I think it’s good to have a few odd ball characters in stakeboarding. I actually met Dill a couple of times in the early 2000s and my impression was that amongst the other pros who were generally acting like big time pro skaters, he was the most down to earth, normal human being, out of the crew. Clearly he was probably off his face at that time so fair play.

Also, all time favourite Dill line… Feedback, nollie 180 up the block, switch crook, then switch back 180 off the block.

All good if you all think he’s a legend. I think he’s definitely a strong and influential figure in skateboarding. I really like Photosynthesis (of course) and also his Mosiac part too. Early stuff was cool but I was busy watching others. I wasn’t particularly up on the cool skateboarding around Trilogy and 21 shot, I saw them briefly at a mates but never saw them properly until way later. I had Virtual Reality on repeat for 3 years probably.

Dill isnt the best of the best. but he is a great skateboarder, and articulate about what he does. his stories and ideas aren’t tidy, but they are interesting/ fun.
and that attention to detail - a video-part made of lines?! is gonna come with self-absorbedness

I’d agree with most of this, interesting and fun and irritating, ha.

On another forum, the subject of Chad Knight came up.

Which reminded me that the first time that I ever watched photosynthesis was with Chad Knight. Just the two of us.

He fast forwarded quite a bit of Jason Dills part.
