The Computer/Software/Marketing Help Thread

PC gamers on here can you recommend a decent gaming laptop that’s not mega money and has these requirements?

Looking at getting a emulation hard drive and don’t want to buy a dodgy chinese gaming console.

You would have to buy a very old shitheap laptop not to meet those specs

Eg one made before 2018

Basically anything newer than 2018 will support that, but I would get one with windows11 as standard on

aye, given that it’s not really asking for specific hardware specs and more so instruction sets/software (ie sse2/direct11 both of which are 10+ years old) you can get away with basically any sorta midrange laptop from the last couple years. depends what you wanna emulate i guess, doing ps3 would require a bit more than say gba n64 etc.

i do wonder, if i’m on the same page on their site as you are, how they can get away with selling emulation systems? obv emulation has been around for a while but as far as i understood it, the devs behind emulation software arent allowed to include the BIOS for said emulator (intellectual property etc), so you have to go find it yourself. then you have that site which seem to be advertising it as an all in one ready to go plug and play solution?

It’s a loop hole , they can sell it if the buyer has a license, which clearly we don’t , but that’s not their problem.

I basically want to play all the old shit now that winter is here and cold rainy nights keep me indoors if im not at a skatepark etc

I got a raspberry pii and installed retro pie. Its pretty simple to do and can play stuff upto the ps1 without any trouble. Good at playing arcade games on like nba jam, street fighter and final fight. Still have to find the roms though.

Yeah can’t be arsed with all that , the hard drive in the video has it all ready to go . Someone took the time to make it all plug and play , all roms , regions , custom games etc . Like a Netflix browser with games consoles and literally every game made for them .

This chat gpt bot is completely mad (good mad) if you haven’t tried it yet. This is one for the nerds tho

This thing is impressive, just written two 10,000 word articles on uk skateboarding and penned a love song. Busy morning.

start in creative not survival mode. you can build whatever you want and dont need to harvest materials. mobs can’t kill you either

survival mode you need something to learn the basic recipes for tools and suchlike. my eldest has a book with all of this stuff but there’s endless information online.

can’t recommend any specific youtube videos but im sure if you search you’ll find something

My daughter does this, I try and play survival mode and get annoyed because I get taken out by a skeleton with an arrow early on and have to start over

you gotta get the basics going and make a base with lights. mobs don’t spawn near the light (but then they get attracted and start trying to break in). mad game

Are you using Adobe InDesign or just normal word/notepad?

just upgraded my i5 to an i9 for video editing. The i5 was running at around 50-60c when rendering but this one is up in the 80s-90s and I can hear the computer crying for breath. Currently got a fairly standard Alpine cpu fan and not much else in there (case is currently open) but I guess it’s not enough for the new CPU. Can anyone recommend a lowish cost upgrade? I don’t really know what I’m looking at when searching.

You’ll need something bigger, like this - https://www.scan.co.uk/products/be-quiet!-shadow-rock-3-single-tower-cpu-cooler-5-heatpipes-120mm-shadow-wings-2-pwm-fan-190w-tdp-in

It will stick out perpendicular to your motherboard, so make sure you have the clearance.

If your motherboard and case is large enough, look at an all-in-one hydro loop. I have an AIO on mine and they’re always good. You can get them in 120mm (1 fan), 240mm (2 fans) and 360mm (3 fans) sizes, along with a few other variations. Basically, you’ll need to mount the radiator and fans to either the front panel or top of the case for it to work.

The small box thing, aka the pump, goes on top of your CPU, sends water to the heatsink and away to the radiator and fans to cool the machine down. You usually need to connect it to the motherboard to control the fans properly and turn on/off all that terrible RGB lighting.

Don’t think you need to install an OS. I got rid of an iMac last year and didn’t reinstall the OS after wiping it

Just got a little camera to film some skate clips on, laptop is blasted so going to buy a cheap desktop strictly for editing bits on. Nothing fancy needed so before I crack on and buy something thought I’d ask if anyone’s got one kicking about they no longer need and I can scab off you for Internet safes, the price of postage and a few pints if you’re going dadlands in May?

I’ve got one and a monitor, it may well be shit because I’ve never used it. Got it for free off someone just for doing uni work on and never set it up. Needs a hard drive but all yours for nothing if you want it.

I’ve got a HP Z440 you can have for £150. Still on windows 7 but has a decent Nvidia gfx card and a Matrox HD-SDI card in built. Matrox card might not be much use to you but I can boot it up and get the specs if you were bovved.

Does anyone else have the issue with Chrome on a Mac (It’s 95% of the time on my Mac Mini) where it just logs you out of everything?

It’ll work fine all day and then I’ll shutdown my machine and the next day it might have forgotten all my logins.
But not always. Only randomly.

It’s not a cookie issue, per se. They are on and should be fine and do their job usually. But sometimes…it just fucks it all off.

Outside of Chrome, things seem to be fine. My dropbox and creative cloud stay logged in.

Any ideas?

I would disable ALL extensions and leave it for a few days to see if this fixes it.

Then enable half of them back, wait a few days.

Then enable half again, wait. And do this until you’ve nailed which extension is doing this. I bet it’s an extension.

Maybe something to do with a cookie extension like ublock origin or something. Or possibly VPN extension blocking certain cookies (had this before as well).
